Why do you replace a pitcher when your defense

is committing errors behind you? The balls are going right to your defense, but they blunder it?
It doesn't appear to be the pitcher's fault, but the pitcher usually gets replaced.

Or it could be because our pitching has been giving up a lot of walks and runs, which means those errors are much more costly when they happen.

There are good reasons to do it sometimes.

1. Lots of errors get the pitcher's pitch count up. Not his fault, but a tired arm is a tired arm no matter who's fault it is.
2. Pitchers sometimes get demoralized when there are too many errors committed behind them. Again, not the fault of his pitching, but when his shoulders droop a little bit, you can't leave him in there. If the errors start to take him mentally out of the game, he is more likely to throw more balls, or he is more likely to throw meatballs, giving his poor defense more chances to make more errors.
3. Defenses get in a compounded error mode. One error begats other errors. This is a team psychology thing that I do not understand, but it happens. Sometimes the only thing a coach can do to stop this is to "change things up." One obvious way to change things up is to put in a new pitcher. Making a "change" sometimes causes the defense to "change" its mindset. Again, this isn't the pitcher's fault, but sometimes it's what a coach has to do to get the entire team to shift gears.
There are probably other good reasons to do it that I haven't listed here.
Pitchers have to learn that it's not always about them. They can be pitching great, but circumstances, including errors, sometimes requires pulling a guy, no matter how well he's pitching.

...until its your starters and your best defensive players or best hitters who are making the errors and you have 2 or 3 of your better players making the errors. Pulling them out and putting scrubs in will make a point, but it won't necessarily help you win the game.
Not to mention, if the errors have taken your pitcher's head out of the game, pulling a position player isn't normally going to get his head back in it, and you have to pull him anyway.
Sometimes you sit them down, when it's feasible. The rest of the time, you make them run their ##### off the next day for every error they make and give other guys the chance to step up and take their position.

Still, in a close game, you can't sit down one of your better hitters because he fumbled. You have to get their heads back in the game somehow. Presumably he is capable at defense, or you wouldn't have him out there to start with.
