Our fun HOA

|

So, I know HOAs often operate like they're their own little fiefdom that doesn't really have to answer to others. Ours is about the same, although we do have good people who serve on the board. The problem is they tend make a lot of missteps when they act without consulting the rest of the neighborhood.
Some in our hood think they're like a sinister Legion of Doom plotting against everyone, but really their #### ups seem to be more out of incompetency than ill intent. Some greatest hits:
-Pushing for new homes to be built in the neighborhood and promising that it would be done by a small-time, honest developer... then stood by as the worst developer in the Charleston area (I won't say their name, but it's Crescent Homes) strong-armed him out to take it over after the hood voted on it. -Convincing everyone to vote and raise dues for a new common use path for carts, bikes, etc., to go to a nearby shopping center without actually getting the folks on the other side to agree to it. That was seven years ago and nothing has been done. -Building a $800,000 park that looks like a few of us Lungers could have built in a weekend for $100 and a case of beer each.
Anyway, I also know it's a thankless job and some of the board members have caught some unnecessary nasty #### from residents. But this latest gaffe is particularly mind-numbing.
Without any discussion with the rest of the neighborhood, they put up two bollards on a path from the hood to a community area that is supposed to be general use for all residents. Especially for golf carts. They did this, using HOA money, because they said people were driving their carts in there too fast and had almost hit a couple of Karens.
The bollards were put in and measured to exactly fit a golf cart if you take em slow. But one of them isn't square due to poor installation. So you can get a golf cart through--unless you have a lifted cart. Which most owners in the hood do.
Now, the board has spent money without approval on something that either has to be redone or taken out completely. Some residents depend on this path to go to work or take kids to school. Now some people are going into a neighbor's yard to get around it.
So, Lunge, what are the smart personal options?
-Wait patiently for the board to fix this #### up? -Drive around it and #### anything else? Cut down any netting put up on the side? -Show up with the boys and a truck and pull those ####### out late one night? -Insert your own suggestion.

Dewalt cordless with a 60a battery and 1/8" cutoff disc. Don't plunge the metal, cut a groove then back and forth in that groove until full penetration is achieved. Then go to another side and cut a groove then back and forth...that is the only way to get to the bottom of the groove without wearing your disc out.

Drop hot fiya on the head of the next person to suggest something ridiculous like that. What is with people down there hating driving golf carts on the street? Sounds like there needs to be a trailer park or small gang problem pop up to distract the busy bodies for awhile.

Taking over the HOA has been discussed by some of us but we don't want to do the work or deal with the drama or the irrational belief that we're some secret society bent on destroying everyone.

Its $160 every three months. So for $640 a year, I get access to two separate pools, a playground, lighted tennis/pickleball courts, maintained common landscaping, food trucks every sunday during the summer, a swim team (if my kid wants to do that when she gets older), multiple neighborhood events such as a kids tri-athalon, kids Christmas party at the clubhouse, and the ease of knowing that my neighbor isn't going to have a pallet deck.

Do you guys allow Pit bull dogs in your neighborhood? Some Pit bull mauled and killed some lady's Golden Retriever and ripped the lady's arm up a couple years back while she was trying to save her dog. This was before I lived here. The HOA decided no Pit bulls allowed anymore. That seems reasonable.

I am glad those type of dogs aren't allowed. I like all dogs, even those dogs usually. I have a dachshund and it would take much to kill him. I have a friend who had a small dog in a condo and the neighbors was really close and they walked out at the same time and that Pit Bull killed my friends dog. That Pit Bull killed 3 other dogs over time until the dog was taken away and put down. I just don't get why anyone would have a Pit.

Years back I attended an HOA meeting in a development

where my mother had a house I inherited after she passed (not gonna say the development but it sounded like Linville Band Harbor in Linville, NC). It's mainly retired folks and/or 2nd homes.
Anywhoo, the board had a 45 minute debate on whether to spend $3 per tablecloth for laundering after functions. It failed to pass on a 3-4 vote.

Our old HOA about to be sued
Jan 13, 2022, 4:03 PM
|
|
On NYE, some kids launched fireworks inside the community poolhouse. Bunch of holes in ceiling, place almost on fire, etc.
Community is legitimately pissed (though of course all parents proclaim their kid would never do such a thing). A few of the HOA board members look at the video cameras, hand over evidence to police, then start sharing names of the delinquents around the neighborhood phone tree.
Problem is, one of the named kids was out of town. Her parents and extended family are about to rip the HOA a new hole. I can't wait to attend the next HOA meeting.
