Is Roper on his way out?
Mar 3, 2014, 12:58 PM
|
|
First off, let me say I'm a HUGE fan of Roper.
For his size, he has been a very gutsy defender and was our only 3 point threat (before Harrison emerged) all of last and this year.
However, his minutes has decreased an incredible amount.
Mainly it's the emergence of Harrison but when I saw Brownell pull out Roper for Ajukwa instead, I thought it was getting pretty clear.
Roper had a wide open 3 and it hit the front rim, not even close. His shots have been poor decisions as of the last few months too.
My condolences for his stroke and I pray that is not the cause for his lack of PT but someone else has to go other than Coleman.

This same situation arose with Harrison towards the beginning of the season.
Remember all of Ropers big games early in the season? You know who was riding the bench at that point? Harrison.
This happens when you have a lot of options in one position on the court. When one guys hot (like Harrison has been the last few games) some guys have to sit the bench and wait their turn. At this moment its Roper, but when Harrison comes back down to Earth, Roper will get his shot.
Roper is fine, he actually hasn't played particularly bad, he just hasn't been getting minutes because Harrison has been playing so well. Plus he's only a Sophomore so his time will come. And he's also a real humble guy and seems to understand that he is part of a team where guys have to play a different role every night.

ACC 2 guards. If he stays, and I'm certainly not against that, he has to learn to play PG, so a redshirt year to focus exclusively on that could greatly benefit him. Our depth in the backcourt next year will be ridiculous

Harrison, but also to Ajukwa. If the Maryland game is any indication, Roper has really fallen out of favor over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps his lack of playing time was due to Maryland's size in the backcourt, but losing minutes to Ajukwa (who hasn't really played much until recently) is saying something.
I like Roper, and he has a nice shot when he is hitting. He hustles and plays hard. But as striperfan stated, Roper can't change the fact that he is undersized (in height and weight). That, plus not making shots, is a surefire way to lose playing time to bigger players who are hitting theirs.

He was undersized when they recruited him so what does that have to do with the price of tea in China.

Brownell said in his post-game press conference that Roper is struggling shooting the ball in his last few games. Roper is a pure shooter - when he's not making baskets, his value to the team drops dramatically.
When he gets whatever shooting funk he's in worked out, he'll be just fine.
It's ridiculous to think that when other players step up in a struggling guys' place, that he's automatically 'on his way out the door'.

shooter in H.S., and played of his athleticism, which is excellent. 2, eventually it's going to come down to numbers, and where we are overloaded is the back court. Next season, we'll have Hall and Filer at PG and Harrison, Rooks, Devoe and Ajukwa at 2G. Where exactly does Jordon fit? It's all speculation, but we're getting close to the point where decisions will have to be made. It will be mutual, and like Coleman, probably based on PT. Right now, it's Jordon who is losing the PT

First of all I find it funny how all of these so called basketball fans always have negative to say concerning anything bad that happens. With that said, none of you know anything, look at his stats sitting on the bench he still shoots 40% from 2 point line down a little bit shooting 31% from the 3 point line compared to Harrison and Ajuka. What happens after KJ leaves which he will and then Roper leaves what the hell are you left with. Please read your stat sheets and stop speculating. Roper is still the 3rd leading scorer on the team and 2nd in scoring. All while averaging 5 minutes per game during the last few games.

not playing him as much recently? How much do you think Roper deserves to be playing? How many minutes? Would you start him? Who do you give him minutes over?
Please let us know, because with the way you are defending him, it sounds like you are a good friend or relative of his. Nobody is attacking him, but rather, trying to decide how he fits into the team now and next year.

Calling him Brownlee is a joke from several years ago, when an announcer (Mike Patrick) kept saying it incorrectly.
Hope that helps.

I have stood beside of Jordan on several occasions and he would need PeeWee Herman-like shoes to be close to 6 feet tall. He is 5'10 at best. Jumps like a beast though.

And for the record I never usually comment because of all the negative things that you all say however with that being said he is a good kid and you guys are always bashing the whole team and for once I have decided that your facts are clearly off base and I cannot allow you all to quote or misquote things. Stop trying to run people off of the team.

I am saying that you all say negative things about the team. Supposedly this is a fan site and if you are all fans we should support the team good and bad and not try and call out individual players. The same thing that you all did last year with Milt and Book just pitiful.

most are fair. It's not negative of Roper, but as you look to next year, where does he play? We'll have 6 other guards on campus including both stealing his minutes right now. That's not being negative, it's being realistic, especially since 1 more player has to leave to make room for the 2 recruits

I was thinking Djambo because if I were BB I would not want to burn any bridges with a HS coach right now, especially in state and particularly in Columbia (where a lot of SC's HS talent is from).
But - it is looking more and more likely. Let us also keep in mind that IF (a HUGE IF) KJ leaves, then our roster is set for next year and there will be no need for another transfer.
