Probably Germones, but in 3 of our last 4 losses

dating back two full seasons, we've given up a KO return for a TD.
Looking forward to how we grow in that area next to complete the circle.

My recollection is that special teams were very good under him.

It had everything to do with the kicker, in 2014 we had a kicker who could kick it high and deep. In 2015 our best kickoff kicker missed the first 4 games and the last 2 games. I think you'll see our kicker make a lot of improvement in this area over the off season, remember he didn't even think he'd be part of the team this time last year.
Also for those of you who keep blaming Danny Pearman he is not the special teams coach!!!!!! Clemson has several coaches who work with the special teams Brent Venables, Marion Hobby, Mike Reed, and Danny Pearman. This is one of the 3 phases of the team, and it's a team issue not one coaches issue.

after the change in rules before the '12 season, touch backs

doubled. it's a big part of it, but most return numbers don't include those, only actual.
if you remember teams started flirting with kicking high & short in hopes of pinning offenses deep inside the 25. it was playing with fire, but coaches out smart themselves at times i guess.
agree with you overall, pinion was sorely missed on kos for touch backs alone.

It also has ALOT to do with coverage, lane assignment(s), and ball awareness! Everyone on TigerNet seems to think "kick it all the way to end zone" fixes the problem but that's a rarity, especially 100% of the time.
I wish we'd hire someone like Joe Lorig, the special teams coordinator from Memphis. Last year they allowed an average of 15.5 yards on kickoffs, a total of 342 yards, and a long of 26.3 yards.
Clemson, on the other hand, allowed an average of 24.5 yards on kickoffs, a whopping total of 1764 yards, and a long of 117! Completely unacceptable. Western Kentucky is the only team to allow more yards in 2015 on kickoffs.

71 returns is a lot because of our offense and lack of touch backs, so the 1764 total would be affected by fewer returns and of course the 3 horrendous returns for TD account for ~3-4 yards of the average depending.
it needs to be fixed. it's been good before.
