Current coaches with a longer tenure than Brownell

here are the current college basketball coaches in power conferences who have a longer tenure than Brownell. (11 completed years since the 2010-2011 season). Brownell has 3 NCAA tournament appearances with 1 sweet 16 in 11 years.
ACC:
Coach K - self explanatory Boeheim - self explanatory Mike Brey, Notre Dame - 12 tournament appearances in 21 seasons. 1 sweet 16, 2 elite eights. Leonard Hamilton, FSU - 8 tournament appearances in 19 seasons. (8 out of the last 13 years). 3 sweet 16s and 1 elite 8. Tony Bennett, Virginia - 8 tournament appearances in 12 seasons. National Champion.
Big Ten:
Tom Izzo Matt Painter, Purdue - 12 tournament appearances in 16 seasons. 4 sweet sixteen and 1 elite eight. Fran McCaffery, Iowa - (same time as Brownell), 5 tournament appearances in 11 years. 1 Final four.
Big 12:
Bill Self Scott Drew, Baylor - 9 tournament appearances in 18 seasons, (9 of last 14).cNational champion. Bob Huggins, West Virginia - 10 tournament appearances in 14 seasons. 3 sweet sixteen, 1 final four.
Big East:
Jay Wright Greg McDermott, Creighton - (same time as Brownell), 6 appearances in 11 seasons. 1 sweet 16. Kevin Willard, Seton Hall - (same time as Brownell), 4 appearances in 11 seasons.
Pac 12:
Dana Altman, Oreon - (same time as Brownell), 7 appearances in 11 seasons. 3 sweet 16s, 1 elite eight, 1 final four. Tad Boyle, Colorado - (same time as Brownell), 5 appearances in 11 seasons.
SEC:
John Calipari
So there are 17 coaches currently in the power conferences that have a longer or equal to Brownell tenure. 13 of them are clearly more successful.
McCaffrey, McDermott, Boyle and Willard are the four who are the most comparable to Brownell. McCaffrey has a final four and more appearances. So he is more successful as well. McDermott has double the appearances and 1 sweet 16, so also above. Boyle has two more NCAA appearances but does not have a sweet 16. About equal to Brownell. And the lone coach who is likely slightly below Brownell in terms of success is Willard of Seton Hall. Does have one more appearance but does not have a sweet 16 run.
All of this info to point out that Brownell's long tenure is one of the longer ones in D1 power five coaches. And the ones that have earned such a long stay are largely very successful. There are only a small amount on the Brownell level and even they have slightly better resumes. It can be argued that Brownell is the least successful coach in the country with such a long tenure.

Thanks, good info....
BB has had his run, and has maxed out like Tommy Bowden. Don't fire BB unless we have a definite upgrade! Just firing a coach can be a disaster if the replacement is not a real upgrade!
For all the fans that don't like coaches son's playing football, did you see Syracuse last night. His son's went 15 of 30 shooting, for 38 Points, and 15 Rebounds, and without them maybe we win the game.
PJ Hall had 19 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 70% from the field. He needs some HELP!
The coach's son's and personal picks I see from Dabo only help our football team on and off the field. We need some like that for BB....
Go Tigers!

I imagine Boeheim has only worked at Syracuse since he started as an assistant there. He played with Dave Bing there as a player I think.

I still count the 13/14 campaign as a NCAA season. We got snubbed - BAD and that did a LOT of damage to the program too.
Next - if you really look at any of the LONG coaching tenures across any sport, you will either find the "legends" at power programs OR "mediocre" coaches at bottom rung schools landing in the middle of the road. Which are we? Still, look at any school where the most accomplished coach is still active and you will notice that BB is on that list with a lot of the other coaches above.
Next - every one of those schools has a much bigger commitment to basketball. And lets be honest, no one has won multiple football championships during their tenure either (though FSU did get one).
My other example would be to point at all the other programs that have had 3 (or more) coaches during the same run and have any been more successful than us?

It would be interesting to compare teams with multiple coaches and see how the success compares. I know that I don't have the time but maybe someone could compare teams that have the reputation as a football school. That seems to be one of the big reasons that I hear that we can't win in basketball, although I don't buy it.

Well, the one *catch* is that unless you have the mega-alumni base in a big state, then it is hard to sustain both - think a 40K student population + a top 10 population state. A Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Texas, UCLA - etc. Even then there is no guarantee. You are still stuck unless you have a generational coach (or buy one like Texas did).
A lot of the "schools" that are either football or basketball invested early 100+ years ago. Back in the leather helmet days, we invested in football... including padding the assistant football coach salary by having them coach the basketball team. Thus reputation are set. Even UNC basketball program was based on success in the 1920s and then a few decades later. A good program can ascend like Duke with the right coach but Duke was already a top-tier program, just not a dominant elite program (like UCLA at the time, now they are reversed).
Then you have the "new" D1 schools in the post NCAA shuffle of the 80s/90s. Basically a lot of schools jumped to D1 and without a major football presence, they just became default basketball schools and are now mid-major powers. In the 90s there was little reason for upper/mid-level talent to opt to be in these non-TV venues. Since the rise of more channels, etc, the VCUs and Wichita St, etc are just as competitive with non-elite P5 programs. Other like urban Basketball-only focused schools also cut into the mix. The Georgetowns or Villanovas. That is why it is tough being an also ran in a P5-football collection.
I am trying to think of one lesser BB schools to ascend to prominence (and not just a one-off run with a specific coach - Like Donovan at Florida). Georgia Tech almost had a chance if Hewitt actually panned out other than one hot run.
FWIW

Thanks. Great work. TU. I’m sure JK will twist these facts to make himself look better.

I'm sure that there are a lot of coaches who accomplished more than Brad you have been let go also.
Like I said many times, Brad would have been fired at any other ACC team by now what he has accomplished except maybe BC and even that is debatable.

Thanks for posting. I would also add... here are the current records of the 4 coaches most comparable to Brad, who is currently 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the ACC:
McCaffrey - 13-4 overall, 3-3 Big 10 McDermott - 10-5 overall, 2-2 Big East Boyle - 12-4 overall, 4-2 Pac-12 Willard - 11-5 overall, 2-4 Big East (was ranked in Top 25 until recent back-to-back road losses)
With the possible exception of Willard - the lone coach on your list of 17 who has arguably achieved less on court success than Brad - Brad is having the worst season. There's a lot to like about Brad - his character, ethical standards, player graduation rates, player behavior, etc. But 12 years is plenty of time to see that, when compared to his peers, he isn't measuring up on the court. And isn't going to, even with another 12 years.
Change is difficult, but it also is needed. Watching his team give it everything they had on the court last night, while he either stood on the sidelines passively with his arms crossed or stomped down towards the end of the bench in anger/exasperation after SYR made baskets or we missed, tells me that. Seeing him (yet again) only weakly push back on the refs when the calls were going against us in the 2nd half, tells me that. Hearing him throw his team under the bus, calling them weak and basically saying they just weren't good enough via his comments about recruiting, tells me that.
I contribute money specifically to the basketball program, and will be there when we play Pitt on Saturday evening, but I've seen enough. It's time for a change. In this business, you can't get rid of all the players (although essentially 50% of the scholarship players Brad has signed have indeed left before exhausting their eligibility, but that's another subject). You CAN get rid of the coach. The players need - and deserve - to hear a new voice. After 12 years, it's time to make that happen.
