How to kill a holly bush?

Nov 27, 2018, 12:12 PM

Need some jounge advice. I have 15 of these satan bushes in front of my house. I cut them down to stumps 6 years ago when I bought the house and have trimmed them a few times since then. I’m in the process of chainsawing them all again now and this time I’m putting total stump killer on all of them.

Is there anyway to actually kill these things? I’ve read the only real way is to dig them out and then pull stump out with a truck and rope. Anyone have experience with getting rid of holly bushes?

Drill several holes in the stump and soak them in kerosene

for several hours. Wait til dark and set on fire. Won’t kill them but it looks cool.

If you have any bit of root bigger than 1/2in around, it will send up shoots and you wind up with more than you started with.

Careful.

The mange went crazy when I posed the simply question "Why is Holly Rowe so fat and ugly" earlier this year.

Of course, I don't keep up with that kinda stuff and didn't realize she was a cancer survivor so I get ripped pretty hard.

Plus the camera adds 100 pounds, so maybe she looks

but you can rehabilitate the salt-poisoned soil with something alkaline like lime or gypsum.

look up what they do after hurricane salt-water floods

Nov 27, 2018, 1:12 PM

it's not permanent damage and can be easily rehabilitated.

Re: Been through the same ordeal - thoughts

1. Cut the tree down to the stump
2. If you are trying to remove the stump, good luck. If the trees are mature the root system is extremely extensive and almost impossible to pull out.
3. If that is the case and you are willing to live with the tree stumps, drill holes deep into the stump and apply a triclopyr-based herbicide or the most basic step - slather plain old tar might help.

Buddy of mine enjoyed their time together

The most difficult way is the best, imo.

Nov 27, 2018, 7:27 PM

A good old fashioned axe, pick and shovel. Dig around the trunk, remove the dirt with the shovel and chop the roots with the axe.

I have seen trees ground below the top soil and poisoned but hiring a stump grinder can be expensive. Maybe you can rent one or something, idk. Get a grinder to come by and give you a price.

cut down said bush

Nov 27, 2018, 11:55 PM

Then poor a concrete slab over it a good 2-3” thick about 10’ in every direction. It’ll slow it down at least, but otherwise, you ask the impossible.

I would drill several holes into the stump, then fill the holes with a strong herbicide. Spray herbicide in every day until the thing dies, then pull it out.
