Here is a radical idea that would never be implemented.

Jan 14, 2022, 6:51 PM

All this talk about the portal coupled with NIL. We may disagree on the edges and disagree on how it will all finally work out, but I think we all agree that college football is now the wild west and some sort of regulation and order needs to be restored.

Well, here is one way to "fix" the problem.

There are 32 NFL teams. Each of those teams gets paired up with 2 colleges. Those 64 teams leave the NCAA and form an alliance with the NFL.

Each NFL team will designate one of their teams as AAA and the other as AA.

The NFL will develop a way to stock those teams initially and from that point on they will hold a draft, much like baseball does today.

The players will be paid under the rules set up by the NFL. The NFL would not have to pay the money out of their pockets. They could negotiate TV contracts. They could also work with the schools so that the schools could use their boosters to raise money to pay the players.

Those 64 teams not invited to join the NFL would just be out of luck. And, those 32 that are selected for AA would just have to make a choice, accept it or refuse the invitation.

NFL could set the rules for transferring, make trades, determine the length of each players contract, etc.

Clemson could be a minor league team for the Atlanta Falcons or Carolina or Jaxsonville or whomever the NCAA paired them with. They might be a AAA or a AA team, as determined by the NFL.

Like I said, this will never ever ever happen. Just a crazy idea I had while thinking outside the box on how much different college football might look like in a few years.

As Elmer Fudd or someone said, "that's a joke son".

At some point the idea of getting an education needs to be introduced into this new found professionalism!

Unfortunately, that horse has left the barn.

Nothing the NCAA has done in the past 40 or 50 years at least demonstrates they are the least bit interested in academics, or earning a degree, except to give it lip service. Every change they have made has lessened the academic requirements to remain "academically eligible" to play the sport.

My biggest frustration for the past 40 years with the NCAA is their lack of concern about education.

My "fix" is not something I would propose or favor. It was written with an underlying sarcasm.

"Well, NCAA, since you don't care about academics and want to be the minor league for the NFL and NBA, how about this?"

Around 1960 There was a cartoon about 2 chickens -- one was a large rooster, Froghorn, and one was a young chicken, Leghorn.
The rooster often said something absurd to the younger chicken followed by: "That's a yoke (i.e., joke) son!" This happened about 6 times per show.

It would work

Jan 14, 2022, 7:02 PM

Without any academics. If they played for the school without attending. Not sure there is an appetite for that, though.

Would it provide more money that could be given to mediocre MBB coaches?

Why would the NFL change the gravy train they have now?

Jan 14, 2022, 8:30 PM

An absolutely free farm system run by the colleges.
