Why Tigers?!!! Why???

Apr 17, 2017, 9:03 AM

https://reason.com/blog/2017/04/10/clemson-us-diversity-training-says-being

Clemson University's $25,000 diversity initiative asks professors to endorse a novel opinion about punctuality: it's wrong, and probably colonialist, to expect people to show up to a meeting on time.

The administration at the public university in South Carolina has encouraged all faculty and staff members to complete an online training course, "Diversity Benefits for Higher Education," which is produced by a company called Workplace Answers.

The training presents faculty members with several hypothetical scenarios. In one scenario, a fictional character named Alejandro schedules a 9:00 a.m. meeting for visiting professors and students (one assumes these people are foreign). Some arrive early, others arrive 10 minutes late. What should Alejandro do? Participants are given three options:

Politely ask the second group to apologize

Explain "In our country 9:00 AM means 9:00 AM."

As the meeting organizer, he should recognize cultural differences that may impact the meeting and adjust accordingly.

The third answer, evidently, is the correct one—at least from the perspective of the training module—according to Campus Reform.

"Alejandro should recognize and acknowledge cultural differences with ease and respect," the module asserts. "Time may be considered precise or fluid depending on the culture."

but this is getting ridiculous. It does seem like this sort of sensitivity training has ramped up under Pres Clements.

Respect for other cultures does not mean that our culture is wrong or that our standards must change. Those who come to our country should expect to adapt to our culture and the culture of academia and business both require timeliness.

What other cultures besides western cultures seem to be carried away right now with the idea that we must change and apologize for who we are? I don't see it in asian cultures, or in countries dominated by Islam.

I always felt it was disrespectful or lazy to show up somewhere later than when you gave your word you'd be there or when you were expected to be there. As a courtesy to the other person or people. Especially if an individual is expecting you to be there. And that's how I was raised. I feel bad making sombody wait on me or disrupt a meeting or a class that's already in progress. It distracts others and is rude. It's not about me and my schedule, it's about being an inconvenience to others and messing up their time and schedule. That's just me though. I'll present this to my work and see how they like it. Probably go over like a fart in a diving helmet.

This type of thinking is what has gotten the U.S. behind other countries in education. The type of thinking that says, there isn't a standard to go by. There isn't a goal to be reached or an achievement to be made. This mentality is where the old saying , "A bad apple spoils the whole bunch," comes from .
If I was a professor the only alternative is to double down against this rhetoric. Look, I was young and thought the world owed me something too at one time. The old , "hey, at least I made it mentality." However staying in that mentality would've gotten me nowhere in life and probably out of a job or 10. Sad thing is this, this WILL become standard thinking in our society in short order.
Lots of things I once thought I'd never see has come to be at the center of new age thinking. People can bring their culture here if they want. But if they want to live in OUR culture, they should have to adapt their culture to ours.

Apr 17, 2017, 9:53 AM [ in reply to Don't know whether its the BOD or Pres Clements... ]

I did extensive research into the "banana incident" almost a year ago, including filing 2 FOIA requests. The administration knew this was a "false flag", and the plan was implemented so that student privacy laws kept everything under wraps. What was clear, however, was that Clements let the activists on staff ... people like Kumanyika and May ... run wild with the follow-up, laying the fault at the feet of white students. At the same time, the Development Director had approached me about a $100k legacy gift, so I wrote a letter to every Board member stating that I wouldn't give a nickel ... save for IPTAY and the Clemson Corps ... until Clements was gone. Two responded with personal notes agreeing, but Clements has the majority fooled. Sad ...

ideas like this are mind numbingly stupid!!!

Apr 17, 2017, 8:04 PM [ in reply to Don't know whether its the BOD or Pres Clements... ]

I don't want to work so my culture says I don't have to show up but you have to pay me...I like to be late and disregard the professor and other students time!!! This kind of sh*t is what's wrong with America!

What is the definition of diversity and who made the rule that it was good? The football Tigers are diverse people but are unified and function under the same rules to achieve success. Can you imagine if we had a player from Nigeria like we did in the Ford era and he was told he could show up for practice"whenever"? That $25000 was wasted and the consultant that made the recommendations is laughing all the way to the bank.

History of time zones

Apr 17, 2017, 10:15 AM

in and off themselves is interesting. Railroad guy changed the timezones and "timeliness" to accommodate travel schedules, I wanna say, around 1850. It took slowly, about a year, but people finally saw it, and we now have tight travel schedules on everything, and the all-important standard time and time zones, to the minute. I'll bet those late people are somehow "on time" to their buses, trains and flights, and other appointments related to health, work, etc. knowing that the consequences are clear (missed flight, lost money).

I sometimes cause myself undue stress over the possibility of my being late for an appointment or occasion.
Maybe I need to look into this " see ya when I see ya " organization . After all of these years me believing that punctuality mattered . What a fool I have been ...I could've slept in .

Wonder if they are ok with being late for flights , trains , funerals , weddings , bar mitzvah , court appearances ...or births .

The only occasion it is EVER acceptable to be tardy for is your own death .

As My Old Sergeant Major Used to Tell Me

Apr 17, 2017, 11:37 AM

5 Minutes Early is 10 Minutes Late. With advent of smartphones etc. there are very few excuses for being late or in a worst case not notifying those you are going to be late at least 15 minutes ahead of time you are going to be late.

This is shameful, teaching kids to be late is setting them up for failure.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

If a meeting is to start at 9:00 am, start it at 9:00am.

Apr 17, 2017, 12:44 PM

If the people show up late and have a good excuse (accident, bad traffic, delayed by someone else, etc.), they should apologize after the meeting and ask about what they missed.

If there is not a good excuse (culture), then they miss out on the information previously presented.

You must respect the other people's time who showed up on time.

No, there has never been a successful business meeting in the history of the world that began by having someone berate guests for showing up 10 minutes late. That stuff may fly in Glengarry Glenross, but in the real world, it doesn't, unless the people you are berating are all a bunch of junior sales people. Otherwise, no, visiting professors aren't going to react well to that.
