Why do so many players play without knee pads?

I know they impact mobility, but are they not effective at avoiding/minimizing injury? It seems like knee injuries are so common and involve some of the longest recovery periods, yet I constantly see college players playing in “shorts”, and NFL players in “skinny” pants.

Knee injuries are the result of the knee twisting in an unintended way. Knee pads in no way keep the knee from twisting so they have no impact on injuries

It’s the difference between being hurt and injured. It’s not pleasant but is temporary

change the course of a game.
The patella is a very sensitive part of the anatomy. Knee pads help protect your knee caps.
Same reason you wear a cup.
Getting kicked/kneed in the nads is also not pleasant and usually “temporary” …

When I played in high school I had the top half of some soft but sturdy chin pads tucked right under the knee pads that were inside the pants they gave you. I had enough mobility to do whatever. Muscles may pull or twist...but I wasn't worried about any high impact. I also had the forearm pads made by Bike. I felt like a little tank back then.

In no way is high school mobility and speed relative to elite football speed. If you were fast with them, you're faster without them. I too looked like a tank in HS all padded up. In college, I dropped the knee pads down to some very small things that weren't even really pads because it was still a rule, and got faster. It's a cumulative effect of a bunch of different things though, not just knee pads.

Uniform style is a fashion statement as much as anything, and will follow trends as such.

One reason is they play upright most of the time. O linemen don’t stay low and block people at the hips and most tackles are a wrestling match up high with receivers and DBs. The other reason, and the main one, is they aren’t playing on the fields of the past. They are either playing on a cushy new turf field with heavy infill of pellets or on expertly manicured and watered grass turf. Even the frozen tundra of Green Bay is a heated surface that won’t freeze. Pretty telling when a week or two ago players were complaining about one of the fields because it was too hard. These guys wouldn’t know hard if it knocked them upside the head.

In place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.

Karl,
I am not sure how this impacts knee pads, but I like it.

Swing a helmet down at 8 to 10 mph... to where it hits you flush in the knee without the knee-pad in 30° degree temperature......then do it again with the knee-pad on the other knee and tell me what you think.

I’ve often wondered the same, but I had the joy of a fractured patella in high school, and that was with a knee pad worn correctly. I caught a swing pass and as I planted to cut a pesky DB riding a rocket ship planted his face mask firmly on my knee. A fractured patella and severely sprained sprained knee was the result. Turned black and blue and Dr Bowman had to to cartilage clean up later. He said it could’ve been a lot worse. Not sure if it would’ve been worse with a bare knee, but have to think so.

Knees pads protect the patella, the kneecap, from fractures. Bruises of the knee are common and pads reduce those. The Army has started giving soldiers knee pads to use. They do help.

Most to all of knee injuries are not contact trauma. All pads protect you from is the occasional bruise and carpet burn from the turf. The only way to reduce knee injuries is to wear those robocop braces the linemen use. Not good for mobility.
