Why do Evangelicals support Israel?

It's always seemed like a pretty odd concept to me, and my assumption has always been "I guess Judaism is technically closer to Christianity than Islam is". But devout Christians (i.e., Evangelicals) don't actually believe that Jews get to go to Heaven, so...why the support again? Enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of thing?

Christianity is belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. Jews flat out reject that, yet somehow many Christians believe Jews are "God's chosen ones" in spite of that all-important rejection.

organizations with the same broad brush he applies to "Evangelical American Christians". I'm not going to waste a lot of time on this dude's opinion since I find it to be a very amateurish take with huge logic leaps in order to brand many American Christians as being anti-Semites in some odd way of defending his own apparent anti-Zionism.
First and foremost - the support of Israel and the Jewish State among the "Christian" folk that I know is pretty much a secular issue as religion has little to do with supporting the Government of Israel. The Israeli Government is not perfect (no Government is), but it sure as heck is the closest thing to a Western Democratic Governance to ever exist in that region. When we are choosing "winners" and "losers" to support in the Middle East - Israel is more closely aligned to our own US ideals of Governance, lifestyle, and freedom than any other group or Government in the region.
Simply put - Israel and it's people are deemed to be aligned with "Western" culture/thought and not stuck in the clutches of a 7th Century mindset that rules much, if not most, of the Muslim world. That is why most people I know support Israel - not some supposed Christian desire to instigate a book of Revelation apocalyptic event.
If you want to narrow the discussion to a very Christian perspective, I'll give my own "broad brush" simplistic answer.
The monotheistic God of Judaism and Christianity are one and the same. The obvious major difference between the two religions being Christ as the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy - the Messiah/son of God. Judaism is not a false religion to Christians but rather a "disagreement", as it were, where Jews have not accepted their mutual belief in Jewish prophecy as having been fulfilled in Christ.
So - from a Christian perspective - it is very easy to get along and support the Jewish people, not only as God's chosen people from which Christ came, but as a people that share a mutual worship of the very same God - albeit with a significant, but non-violent, disagreement in prophecy fulfillment.
I think a lot of Christians, like myself, appreciate that we have peacefully coexisted with the Jewish faith for a long time now and simply hope that someday they will accept Christ and the new Covenant.
The regional opposition to Israel, on the other hand, is foreign and contrary to many of our Christian beliefs. If one holds to the teachings of Christianity, Islam (as contained in the Koran and Hadith) describes a deity they declare to be the one true God (i.e. Allah) whose direction, judgements, and tenants simply do not comport with the one true God of the Christian/Jewish faith. I, and many other Christians, will never accept Islam's "Allah" as being the same God of Abraham as that of Judaism/Christianity no matter how much Muslims pretend it is so. To many Christians, Islam's "Allah" is a false God.
So from a Christian perspective - it makes full sense that many Christians support Israel vs the Muslim alternative. IMO most American Christians find it easier to identify with Israel than they do the Muslim people/culture. The fact that Islamic terrorism has been a thing since the '70s also plays a significant part in who Christians side with as well.

where they basically believe we'd better stick by Israel no matter what because they are God's chosen ones. I know a lot of people who believe exactly that, and it's almost entirely based on religion. They will tell you it is. I just find it odd how so many Christians handle the reality that God's chosen people, in this case, flat out reject Christianity, in spite of the shared history, beliefs, and cultural similarities.

It's because most Christians are afraid to think for themselves. They'd rather practice blind faith in their 'Preachers' than risk being labeled a heretic.
The answers to these conundrums is in the scriptures if one wants to search for them.

In the book of Revelation, only Christian and Gentile Jews are the true Jews, the new chosen people. The Jews who reject Jesus are in the “synagogue of satan.” End-times theology allows for many to convert after Jerusalem is destroyed and the beast takes over Israel. Despite all appearances, I don’t think Trump can be the beast because he’s not likely to live long enough. He fits the classical definition of an Anti-Christ, just too old to be THE Anti-Christ.

Believe it or not, Islam shares more fundamental beliefs with orthodox Christianity than orthodox Christianity shares with Judaism.
To Muslims, Jesus was the greatest prophet (Mohammed was the last). To Jews, he was a rabbi. Neither believe he was divine.
Muslims believe in the virgin birth; there's a long section in the Koran that elaborates on Mary's visit from an angel. Obviously, Jews don't believe that part.
Muslims believe in many of the miracles including raising the dead. Obviously, Jews don't believe that either.
The divergence of Christianity with Islam, outside of divinity, is the resurrection. They believe he survived crucifixion and ascended like Moses. That part doesn't make sense when they already believe he could raise the dead.
Many Christians don't realize they are supposed to believe that Jesus descended to Hell and preached to the imprisoned souls before he was resurrected on the third day. Even Southern Baptists are supposed to believe that, but it's very hard to find one who knows about that part.

It's fairly new to the evangelical movement. It really started in the 70s with The Late, Great Planet Earth and other works that emphasized the book of Revelation (a book that only made into the Bible as a compromise between factions to also include the book of James).
In short: For the battle of Armageddon to happen, Israel has to exist so it can be destroyed. At the end of their story, Israel is no more. There's also a bit where the temple has to be restored before that, and they argue whether the al Aqsa mosque has to be torn down or if there's room to restore the temple beside it.

Two reasons:
First - Jesus was a Jew. The Jews, as a race and as a people, were/are God's chosen people, in spite of their wandering and abandonment of Him.
Second - it has nothing to do with religion - they are a highly oppressed people who just want to live their lives. They're not perfect, by any mean. But there are FAR more Arabs/Muslims who not only live in Israel but are Israeli citizens than there are Jews in Arab lands. Those folks have a pretty short and/or miserable life span. The Jews are willing to live with the Arabs. The Arabs, for the most part, are NOT willing to live with the Jews. In my mind, I support Israel for the same reason I support Ukraine or Taiwan or any other nation or people group that finds itself constantly targeted by a larger nation/people group when all they want is to just live their lives.
