Why did we not walk the batter in that situation?

Apr 18, 2021, 2:42 PM

1 out, with runners at 2nd and 3rd, in bottom of 9th.

What do the analytics say?

I’m asking as someone who is a baseball fan, but never has played or coached a game in my life.

Yes, Mat, they're 2 ways to play it. Most would walk the hitter but imo, Monte was looking at their lineup behind the current hitter. Ok.

So, the walk and sac fly with bases loaded, returns the same result we got. What he was hoping was to pitch low, perhaps get a called strike, jam the batter inside to induce at best a soft infield pop or get the batter to chase and strikeout.

Instead. The very first pitch was a nice juicy fastball on the outside part of the plate. Any decent hitter would do exactly what he did.

I love our guys and think we have some talented, but young players, but your best two hitters can't go one (or two) for twenty-two with 11 strike-outs in a series and expect to win a game ....... unless our other players are taking up the slack, as we saw some toward the first of the year. I wish I knew the answer, but players and coaches are going to have to do better if we expect to be competitive.

^^^ gets it ^^^

I'd pitch Ricky, maybe give Grice another mid week whack, continue to let Ty chunk it and let as many of the young guns get reps the rest of the year. Not saying to cash it in but play the longer game. It may just relax the guys and take away any pressure... And who knows.

The batter had a .111 batting average.

Yep. I'm sure Geoff didn't make that pitch on purpose... Sure wasn't what hack was expecting the way he was setup. That's just baseball. Got to play the odds. Guess I didn't explain it very well.
