Why CFP expansion failed, for now.

Jan 18, 2022, 7:48 AM

IMHO, it’s pretty simple. After months of meetings involving Greg Sankey, Bob Bowlsby and others. All the time Greg Sankey was behind the Big 12’s back, poaching two of their teams. How can the ACC, Big 12 and Big 10 Commissioners trust SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey?

While it is Sankey’s job to better his Conference, in my opinion he is a slimy, backstabbing snake.

And likely that’s pretty much what the other commissioners think.

Personally I think it’s about money.

The ACC Commish is trying to leverage the ACC out of this god awful TV contract.

That’s truly all this is about. People need to stop with everything else about being mad at SEC. The PAC-12 and Big 10 are ok w expansion.

I agree with everything you said.

However, this CFP expansion is about money. Money ??. The SEC teams will be making 10s of million$ more per team than most all power 5 teams and without some sort of structure to minimize how many SEC teams flood the playoffs, they’ll make even more in an expansion. That’s it.

Now, the rest of college football needs to get their collective act together and field championship level teams. The fact is, Clemson has more CFP wins than the big10, pac 12, and big XII, COMBINED.

The SEC has had 3 CFP championship teams and the rest of power 5 football has had 2.

Players do not want to play two or three more games each year. You have already seen with the opting out of players this year. Extending the season WILL increase revenue but it will NOT determine the best team.

If the CFP could be decided in 12 games, there would still be players opting out of bowl and playoff games. The opting out which is really quitting your team is a way of drawing attention to themselves. It says, look how great I which makes that player more important than the team.
To top it off they still want to go to the game, stand on the sideline and get all of the bowl perks. The player has a win, win situation and the team is put in a lose, lose situation.

There is no doubt that the optics of the SEC grabbing Oklahoma and Texas immediately after the expansion talk started heating up looked very bad and put all the other conferences on heightened alert. All of the conferences now realize that if they don't do everything they can to better their own position then there is a very real possibility that they are going to keep falling further and further behind the schools/conferences with all the money. It's a good thing this happened the way it did.

There is a lack of trust with the SEC. But at this point, holding up the CFP expansion is about more than just that.

I would like to have been a fly on the wall when the ACC coaches talked to the Commissioner about their concerns. I'm guessing the real issue is just competitive imbalance, and how NIL will likely make that even worse.
