Who knows how things would have worked out with Cain in the game last year

Jan 7, 2017, 10:00 AM

Afterall, it wasn't scoring points that seemed to cost us the game. But its nice to see the message received by the whole team after Dabo suspended Cain for the game... no trouble over break for the team, now its time to win a national championship!
Pulling for a Tiger victory, but would love to see Cain with a monster redemption game.

Go Tigers!!

We'll see how much difference,

his two touchdown receptions Monday night make!

Moving the ball and scoring points wasn't the problem ...

Probably anything Cain might have produced was more than off-set by the monster game Renfrow had.

I still say the biggestplayer we missed was

Bradley Penion.

As weird as it sounds this is probably true, if Pinion stays his full eligibility we are probably talking about winning two straight titles. He obviously made the right decision for himself, since he was picked in the 5th round as punter which is almost unheard of.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Offense wasn't the problem in last year's game. Defense gave up 45 points. Smh. Cain wouldn't have changed the outcome.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Defense didn't give up 45 points ... only 37, and offense

Jan 7, 2017, 12:51 PM

scored 40.

Both defenses got scorched, but our offense scored enough points to win the game 40-37.

And honestly, the onsides kick gave Bama an extra possession and put enormous pressure on our already tired defense.

Lord give me a break my perfect. There's a reason you see a slash between defense and special teams. Example below.

Defense/Special Teams.

The point is clemson gave up 45 points. Has nothing to do with Cain being out of game. Feel like I'm talking to my wife.

I completely agree with you that Cain probably makes no difference in the outcome of last years' game.

He doesn't play defense and he doesn't play special teams.

For the record, I don't see where you typed defense "/" special teams in your post. That's why I made the distinction.

My point being that defense didn't lose the game. Special teams did.

Defense and special teams are two very different things. There is no "slash" connecting them to each other.

When you talk to your wife, be sure she doesn't think that you don't know that ... ;)

Baffles me that you say defense didn't lose game for us. Ask Boulware why they lost last year. Ask anyone on defensive side of ball. Ask Venables. They'd all say defensive lost game. Special teams on Kick Off is defense. The goal of defense is to prevent other team from scoring. So tell me what the difference btwn defense and kick off unit. Don't both attempt to prevent other team from scoring? My wife probably knows more about football than you.

Thanks.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure why it "baffles" you.

Jan 7, 2017, 2:01 PM

Special teams is not the "defense" ... they are responsible for kick returns as well as kick coverage. They produce points on FGs and extra points.

They separate them out as a totally different unit for a reason.

Special teams is a unit unto themselves and they are responsible for a third of the game.

If you think Boulware or any other defensive player would watch a long kick off return by the other team completely change the momentum in a ball game and then say, "Oh well, that was on us ... the defense caused that." you're dreaming.

Special teams as an individual unit allowed both the the onsides kick and the touchdown on the return that off-set a lot of the good work by both the offense AND the defense.

Boulware (who played almost exclusively on kick coverage as a freshman) would be the last one to say that the defensive team is responsible for special teams mistakes.

First of all thumbs up to all of you responding to my post without giving a thumbs down bc of disagreeing. That's pretty unique on here. I realize that there are 3 units per team. Ultimately I just meant that the defense (whatever unit is attempting to prevent scoring whether that's punt return coverage or kick off coverage) lost the game for us. That was my only point in response to the OP. Cain made no difference in outcome of game. I'm sorry I tried to shorten the reply I made earlier by just saying "defense" instead of typing out "defense and special teams". I had a mishap in thinking since we all are superfine of clemson and the game of football we have tigernet accounts to talk about it I assumed you would realize what I meant. Re read the original post aND my response. I was just saying Cain made no difference bc defense (whoever prevents scoring) didn't play well.

Go Tigers!

I gave you 2 "thumb's up" for just agreeing to disagree.

We good?

There are three distinct facets to a football team

Jan 7, 2017, 2:08 PM [ in reply to Re: Defense didn't give up 45 points ... only 37, and offense ]

Offense, defense, and special teams.

Blending special teams into either of the other facets is a mistake.

They do their own thing, for better or for worse.

You the type of person who corrects your elders aren't you? Youre that guy that's always correcting tiny insignificant things in conversation aren't you? Probably why you don't have many friends.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now you're just being silly, aren't you?***

But, sadly most of my "elders" are dead and gone.

Yes I think losing Lawson and Mack hurt most.
Plus covering OJ Howard

Tigers have a great opportunity.

Go Tigers!
