Of course I do. I ran the stadium steps in those days. The benches on the sidelines were wooden, too. Ever heard the phrase "riding the pine"? I've ridden my share, and some others' shares, too.

I'm in. Remember them well. I had one of the planks until my last move and now can't find it. I even sold programs in the late 50's. Is that old enough to qualify?

I have a couple sets of custom made knives with handles made with the bleacher wood. Saving them for wedding gifts for my kids and nieces that are lifelong Clemson fans/graduates.

I'm definitely old enough, but being as my first experience

with Clemson is when I stepped onto campus in 1972 as a freshman, I missed that era.

:)

I certainly remember

The wooden seats but I DO NOT remember leather helmets!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At one time, they were in a debris pile there pretty much

Aug 30, 2022, 10:05 AM

for the taking.

Clemson hoops coach Bobby Roberts built a nice big deck on the back of his house using the discarded seat planks.

You can see them repurposed in other places as well.

Not sure what kind of wood they were, but they certainly stood up to the weather for many decades.

I remember them as I sat on them

Definitely Remember Them

One of the workouts for cross country/track distance runners was an hour running the stadium seats. At the time no upper deck so you had 72 rows (A-Z, AA_ZZ, and UA-UZ). We used the clock on Tillman Hall to keep track of the time.

I do. But the most memorable seat "experience" I have is sitting on the temporary metal bleachers at the top of the hill for the 1971 (I think) game vs. jr. It mostly sleeted, snowed a little, rained a little and I didn't have the clothing for it. Probably the coldest I have ever been. Cold.metal was probably worse than splinters that day.

Did you really have to remind us of that? When it rained, they were extremely slick. Had to be careful if going for something behind the stands, ie, bathroom as tiny as they were.

Absolutely I do. The numbers were branded into the wood. I also had a summer job in grad school pulling out those wooden seats & installing the aluminum ones. Splinters AND busted knuckles as well.

If you’d like to see some of them they were used as chair railing on the walls of the Village Baker restaurant in Pendleton
