Should Early Signing be eliminated due to the Portal?

Dec 11, 2022, 11:25 AM

I heard some of the sports talking heads discussing this on the radio. What they were suggesting is to eliminate early recruit signing and just have national signing day because the portal is going on at the same time. Many high school recruits are probably going to lose spots to transfer players that might be more ready to play immediately.

I like the idea of keep some difference between the portal having some distance. Another thought is to have NDS come before the Portal to give recruits first shot at getting signed?

Thoughts?

That sounds like a terrible idea for high school players. Early signing day should be moved up to August.

Which Group Should Get 1st Priority? HS Recruits or Portal?

I think the portal is going to really hurt those 3 star and less players that can be good but needs development and may no get picked up by a P5 school and have to go mid major or FCS

I would prefer that portal players have to wait until the February NSD before they are eligible to sign with another team. This would give teams time to evaluate and recruit these players. Hopefully this would also eliminate a percentage of the tampering.

Calandar for portal and NSD.

Here is my suggestion. For discussion purposes only. I could be convinced to change my mind.

NSD: Starts 12/21. Continues for 2 months. HS or JUCO guys could sign anytime in that 2 month window. (Most would sign on 12/21.)

Portal: Signing period: 8/1 - 8/15. Portal guys could sign anytime during that period. They could enroll in school and be on scholarship. They could practice with school, but not play in any games. (This would be the year they sit out.) It would not count against their 5 year clock, essentially giving them 6 years to play 4.

I’d like the idea for the portal signing day to be August 1 to the 15th but neither of the players nor coaches nor administrators would like it. Coaches don’t want to give up a scholarship for someone who can’t play that year and the players are going to want to sign as soon as they determine they aren’t going to play or they want to leave their team, which is usually in the fall.

By the way, I see that Amari Gainer is leaving FSU. He was a great locker room presence, and a great ambassador for the Florida state program. Perfect example that sometimes the best people for a culture in your program may want to leave.

Same thing with the portal. Turn it into a BLACK FRIDAY sale!!
