Whats the one year you think Clemson was good enough

To win it all, with it being a year that we didn’t.
Of course 2019 and the other recent years we missed. But what about ever?
I’d say 1978. Lost to Georgia, but then dominated most of the wins from there and looked good.

Absolutely a national championship team… Hatfield managed 10-2…
Ford would’ve won another national championship…

We had the best defense in the nation. We had the second best offense in our history, and that’s without Terry Allen who went pro.

Everyone is trashing you here for the comment but living through that time attending games, there’s some level of truth to what you are saying. I’m a huge Danny fan but you’re right, we did lose some games in that era where you’d just shrug and shake your head.

Can't give enough TU's for this! 1990 was loaded. We would have won it all IMO.
Agree 2019 definitely had the talent.
1978 was a great team and had the talent.

I remember going to the Prowl and Growl or whatever it was called that year and remember the expectations, but when Tommy was talking I had the feeling he did not think we had what the media thought we had. Dang if he wasn’t correct but at the time I did not think he would lose his job. After Wake Forest it was evident he was losing it but had no idea it would happen as soon as it ended up being.

If Deshaun doesn't get hurt in the Spring or during that season I think Clemson goes no worse than 12-1 and gets into the first CFP instead of FSU. Clemson had a national championship level defense.

It was the #1 defense in the nation.
One thing about Dabo’s reluctance to stray away from his starting QB that people don’t understand, because they don’t actually follow Clemson football, is that it has likely been because our backups in the last couple years were not as good as DW or TL in their freshman years.
People act as if any backup we ever have now can come in and save our a**es like Deshaun and Trevor. It was about the 4th game of both of their freshman years where they were both really put in the 1st string spot.
But, if Dabo had let Deshaun play from the point he came in and threw a TD against Georgia until the end of the season assuming he does not get hurt, I think we at least make it to the national championship.
Maybe we still lose to Georgia, but we would’ve won the FSU game without Jameis, and would’ve certainly won at GT if Deshaun does not get hurt.
And no one can tell me otherwise because we now have proof of Deshaun’s accolades in college.

If Mike Williams doesn't break his vertebrae at the beginning of the year we absolutely would have won that year.
But at the same time Mike would have gone pro after that season and I don't think we'd win the championship in 2016 without him so it's a bit of give and take.

It is a testament to that team that Nick Saban knew he was in trouble enough to have to pull things from way down in his bag of tricks to pull that game out. But, he did it, that is what the great ones do, they find a way. Just like we did, the very next year.

Bama getting in then was a bigger joke than this year. Didn't even win their half of the conference. Should have been Ohio State but committee didn't want Clemson to embarrass them again.

THIS year. Yes, they nearly had what SHOULD have been an elimination loss against Awbarn. But, it wasn't.
Remember 1981? We barely squeaked by TULANE 13-5. North Carolina, 10-8. Champions normally have at least one close win, or even a loss, somewhere along the way. But, they find a way when it counts, and get to hoist that trophy.

I remember 1989. Spent most Saturdays driving home from college and listening to Jim Phillips.
Kept listening to the Duke game thinking, "this can't be right. we'll pull it out. just need a little more time." And then there was no more time. I was dumbfounded.

1984 - Hope someone with a better memory can confirm, but if I remember correctly we were coming off 12-0, 9-1-1, 9-1-1 seasons and were ranked number 1 or 2 going into GA game. Some said this team was better than the 1981 team. William Perry and Mike Epply were seniors and again we had an awesome defense. Had a big lead at GA and had like 6 or 7 turnovers letting them back in the game and lost on butlers 60 yd field goal. Cost us not only that game but the next week at GT as well. Closed the season out with loses to MD and USC. A lot like this years team, a team that could have gone undefeated, ended up 8-4. Am I remembering correctly?

The defense was good enough this year, 2017 and 2014 to win it all. Offense was a problem in all 3 years of course.
