What's the big deal about the name Tillman on Tillman Hall??

Jan 14, 2015, 11:53 PM

In all honesty, do we really need to change the name of Tillman Hall. If so, I do like Freedom Hall but I don't think we should have to change it.

Gov/Sen Tillman did a lot of great things for the US/State and I think it's great we honor citizens that give back to the community, especially those that are tigers that bleed orange and purple.

Can't we all just get along?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no. We cannot all just get along. You must be made to care!

That is how liberalism works don't ya know?

Election fraud, corruption, cronyism?.. Gee, I dunno. What are all these great things he did, anyway? Besides make a lot of other racists happy by helping to destroying the black political establishment in SC at the time.

Jan 15, 2015, 3:06 AM

Tillman became one of seven men named lifetime trustees of Clemson College. Tillman was in effect, one of the founders of The Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina. Did you know that Thomas Green Clemson enlisted for the Confederacy at age 54? Son John Calhoun Clemson did likewise.
If you are for changing the name of Tillman Hall, would you also be in favor of changing the name of the university? If you don't like it, there are other schools that can be attended & other teams to pull for. If you don't like the ACC, there's always the SEC.

I'm not aware of anything TG Clemson did

Jan 15, 2015, 3:15 AM

that comes close to the evils perpetrated by Ben Tillman. I don't believe joining the Confederacy to be some heinous crime. Most of them probably felt they were just defending their homes and families. I don't see how that equates to organized mass murders and election fraud. Your logic is bizarre, to say the least..

you miss the point...

Jan 15, 2015, 7:20 AM

The political correctness crowd won't stop at Tillman once we cave. Thomas Clemson will be linked to Tillman because they were buddies. Just by close association, you will get the next wave of demands. "Change the University's name", they will demand.

Just look at the whole Indian mascot thing. Don't play dumb.

This is part of a bigger agenda that the naive seem to get fooled by over and over again and it needs to be stopped. The whitewashing of history for the sake of not offending someone is in and of itself damaging and dangerous. It leads to faux claims of rights existing that are based on superficial, emotional BS.

The answer whenever this raises its ugly head is to just say no!

No, we will not be forced/made to care!

You're not being honest, perhaps not being honest...

with yourself.

From your perspective the Civil War was fought to free the slaves. That's not true but you believe it so that's where we should start.

If the Civil War was all over slavery then anyone who fought for the South fought to maintain slavery.

You just read a list of men who established Clemson University who also fought for the South. How can you choose which racist to eliminate from honor at Clemson and which to ignore?

If you told me you were female I could understand.

You really have a hard on for changing Tillman Hall. Why

Jan 15, 2015, 9:21 AM [ in reply to What's the big deal about mass murder, terrorism, advocacy of genocide ]

don't we just leave it as it is, and not change the name?

I don't care about your opinion, and just because you believe something doesn't mean that I am going to agree with you.

Most people on this board don't agree with you and no matter how many times you post this nonsense about changing the name of Tillman Hall, you will not change opinions.

Again, please enlighten me to all the great things Tillman did while in office

Jan 15, 2015, 3:21 AM

From what I can tell, he spent most of it working to disenfranchise black voters and preaching white supremacy.

Here's Tillman in his own words:
“We have done our level best [to prevent blacks from voting].. We have scratched our heads to find out how we could eliminate the last one of them. We stuffed ballot boxes. We shot them. We are not ashamed of it.”

This really isn't about Tillman. Get your head out of the sand (or wherever it is).

I don't know what it will take to satisfy the PC crowd. They are jumpier than a long tail cat in a room full of rockers.

They will nitpick the normal people to death to prove they aren't racist.

Amazing how many that 'defend history' know so little about history.

Can anyone tell me what he actually did good

For the state?

Everything I've read has him corrupt and disenfranchising minorities. Things we should be able to acknowledge weren't good for the state.

I'm not attacking Clemson because we have buildings named after bigots and racists too. It's a product of both schools being in a state with a long history of bigotry and racism.
