It's hot as hail and A/C's can't keep up. Lots of houses built in SC don't have proper insulation. Builders must have figured they could cheap the raw material cost here because it never gets too cold or hot, right?? Only problem is they didn't count on global warming.
I'm trolling climate haters, FYI.

Set on 72 during the day normally…it does ok until the afternoon. I have no tree cover. Keep all shades/blinds closed. It has been getting up to only 74, but today 76. Have replaced all filters…coils are clean…lines are insulated.
As my dad likes to remind me…he grew up (and I did for a while) without AC…I reminded him that I work in an office or at home…I’m soft when it comes to comfort. But these are first world problems for sure…
I’ll sit up until midnight or so until the AC catches up and can get temps down to 70…trying to sleep above 70 is a losing proposition. Silver lining…quiet time to watch what I want!

from the sun. Add insult to injury I've got this massive window above our front door that is basically like the laser beam from the movie Real Genius. I've got two units and the bottom unit struggles. I'm about to replace more windows with argon encapsulated which will help some.
Best put, you're not alone. Oh, and thank you Duke power for the kiliwat hike. A 500 power bill for a 3700 square ft house is diabolical.

My A/C is set on 75 and I've noticed that it doesn't run all day long like I hear my neighbors running, but my A/C is brand new, and I think that is the reason that it doesn't have to run continuously all day long.

By code, you're mostly correct. Some stipulations in small spots...

Like ocean houses on stilts, and having multiple hurricane provisions by code. But, in contrast houses in, say, Abbeville are very sketch. Not sure if it's changed, but I remember assisting on a house that only had corner plywood, and the rest of the house covered in 1/2" insulation. Then no TYVEK either. Just wrap that up with thin vinyl siding. You can literally cut into those homes with a pocket knife through an outside wall. Pitiful!

Even though it has been completely remodeled, the house that I just bought here in Kernersville NC was built in 1951 and its solid as a rock bc it was built when lumber that was true size. A 2X4 was actually a 2X4 and not 1 and a half by 3 and a half.

whole thing. YOU GOT ME GOOD.LOL!!!!
And...did you ever see that house of the future they built at FURMAN about 20 years ago? I went with a builder to a big sitdown dinner and seminar about this,"Green Home", first of the propoganda I ever remember seeing about Global Warming (Before that hoax got blown apart and they had to rename it "Climate Change"). Anyway, it had a fully encapsulated, foam insulated crawl space/basement,main level, and attic, cedar shake roof, COPPER GUTTERS (You never had to paint,LMAO, my first thought was they wouldn't last a week before some crackhead ripped them off your house),and a 2 thousand gallon water tank in the ground that captured rain water from the gutters,etc.,etc.,etc. And then this was the kicker....I asked them HOW MUCH WAS THIS TYPE CONSTRUCTION going to cost per foot. You know what they said,"Oh, we don't know...we haven't really kept records of the actual costs, but it will save energy galore". I kid you not! My blind referee friend,a builder was with me, and heard me say,"We are guessing it is in the seven to eight hundred dollars a foot range...KEEP IN MIND THIS WAS BACK WHEN HOUSES WERE SELLING FOR 80 TO 100 DOLLARS PER FOOT. NEW HOUSES.
I told them the only people that could build such a house, only cared about energy savings because they were wanting to show off to their elite friends. The average person was not going to pay seven times the normal cost to save 50 dollars a month on energy....TO my knowledge, no builder ever built one of those homes as a spec....
Well....let's go to the river....

Builders for decades have to meet insulation codes set by federal guidelines.
I also appreciate your jab at the haters, but I think another reason for AC units having trouble keeping up is they keep changing refrigerant requirements - which is from the dim lib haters.

Lots of too soft Americans, that is for sure. It gets hot in the summer. It gets cold in the winter.
Every time we get slightly higher summer temps the media is full of warnings against going outside. When we get an all day freeze in the winter we all hear constantly that we must stay inside. "Don't mow your lawn today, the heat will kill you." Syracuse declares a winter emergency ever winter seeking more government money to 'battle'the cold that is about what it's always been.
100 years ago essentially nothing was air conditioned in the south. Offices had windows. Men wore suits to work in offices and no one wore shorts to do manual labor. Heck, fans went to baseball games all summer wearing suits and ties. In Green Bay they played football in the very cold and fans put on coats and went to the games.
Can't sleep at less more than 72 degrees? How did Charleston survive in the 1800s.
I'm in my 70s. Almost every time I mow the lawn my lovely wife worries (Or Hopes?) I am going to die from heat stroke.
I am not trying to pick on anyone in particular. I'm just bitching about nearly everyone complaining about nearly everything while mostly living in a safe, comparatively rich time and mostly living longer than was the norm throughout history.
Relax about temperature fluctuation and toughen up.
I wonder if old men are grumpier now than our great grandfathers? I suppose so.

Your A/C is sized as follows:
If it's 92 outside, it will keep it around 75/76 inside.
It's fine for most of the time.
When the heat index is near 100, it will not keep up during the day.
Most housing has "the proper" insulation..............translation....they put in only what's required.
Lots of factors going on.
Does your house get much shade? Does you condensing unit sit in the sun or shade in the afternoon? What's the SEER rating and age of your system? Probably somewhere between 12 and 15seer.
My house is 2600 square feet. I have two 2.5 ton A/C systems....one upstairs/one down stairs.
I haven't turned either of them on in over 5 years.
I added 5 mini-spilt units.( 9000 btu's 38 seer )
You basically only need to turn on the ones in the area where you are.....great room, pool room, bedroom....
At night, the only unit running is the one in the bedroom......I can drop it to 65 degrees in there.
Electric bill runs about $180.00 per month right now...........when the weather isn't extreme.....about $120.00.

Not sure about the grumpier part…my dad seems to have mellowed with age.
Yeah, I think I indicated above that these are first world problems and nothing really to complain about compared to how most of the world lives.
