Here is a serious question about big tech

If they can shut down Parlar, why can't they shut down Child Pornography? Is there an issue with legalities?

Kiddy pr()n is not hosted in just one place. Its all over; the dark web, servers in the back of a closet masking IPs, bits of torrents that are on servers in different countries. If it were that easy, it WOULD have been shutdown years ago.
If I had to guess, Parler will end up being hosted out of the country somewhere.

When I saw child #### on Facebook. I'm guessing it's not on Twitter, either.
I don't think Apple or Google offer apps that let you access that.
More and more with this "Big Tech" stuff, I'm feeling like we're having to explain how technology works to old people.
I'm assuming you don't have a problem with Facebook/Twitter/etc. banning child #### from their platforms, right?

Exactly. I'm certain you wouldn't.

Thus, you support these platforms being able to police their own content, thus operating in a free market and exercising their own free expression.
From there, you shouldn't have a problem with what happened to Parler.

So I'm not sure how Facebook/Twitter/Google/etc. would shut down child ####. As someone said, those folks are hiding all corners of the world and using the dark web. What do you propose?

no one gets to the internet without access through a portal. start there. But hey, i guess if it ain't hurting no one we should just leave it alone, right? Because, obviously, there is no solution because there is no problem, right?

A means of entry. It is either paid for, stolen, or created. Can you plug into the internet w/o first paying for access? I can't. Someone always knows who is coming and who is going - what they bring with them and what they take away when they leave.

One would think that.

Lets say I go sponge internets off of, say, a starbucks. Sure, I leave a MAC address footprint on their routers, but past that, I'm basically anonymous.
Or even if I use an anonymizer or VPN, there are logs somewhere of where I originated. But there are many ways to "break up" my original IP into 100 different directions, where it appears I could originate at more than one place at once. Its not that difficult to do. And once I go out of the US, the ability to track, or even the willingness to track my access goes down substantially.
Ever wonder why every time some Saudi prince wants to leave you $10 Billion dollars, its almost always originates in some 3rd world country in Africa? Or why every call you get to sell you a car warranty originates in India or China?

Here is a scenario for you:
A person, this is true, locally downloaded Child ####. Local police were immediately notified. They searched his home, computer, and phone. He is facing many years of prison time for it. Now, if everything is encrypted, how did the "authorities" know what was downloaded?
Apparently this person was using VPN and on the "dark" web. It did not take much to track and prove his guilt.
I admit, I don't know the details on how the web works - just my small little piece of the "action." How i access it, what it takes for me to travel the internet highway, etc. Never been to the dark web - not going either.
Now, though I don't know all on the ins and outs, I am not suggesting in any way that it would be easy to do. I suggesting it can be done, however. And, I am asking why is it not being done.

I have no reason to doubt that possibility. None at all.
I will continue to believe more can be done, though. Since I can't do it, I will leave this conversation with this, "Have a great day Soccerkrzy!"
BTW, i did not intentionally miss the Bowl Pick'em. Dad gum it.

Police have units and detectives, along with tech whizzes, who can hunt, track, and break through that stuff to catch perps. Sometimes they catch someone who leads them to others. Basic detective stuff but with some computer geniuses helping.

Let's take Google, for example. Google doesn't offer that portal. That portal exists somewhere, but it's out of Google's realm of control. It's likely set up on the dark web out in Russia or Indonesia or something.
Google has no way to do anything to that portal, let alone Facebook or Twitter. So what, exactly, are you proposing those companies do about? That's the topic of your OP.

To encounter such awful things on the Internet, you would have to seek them out, much like you would have to do some serious digging in Parler (or many other mainstream apps) to find these extremist positions.
You can go and find horrible stuff right now on Google Groups, and that app is widely available on the Apple store and (go figure) the Google Play store.

But I'm seeing a lot of that lately. Apologies to Hunt, though.
His question doesn't make a lot of sense. How could they shut it down?
Does Google try to police what's in their groups? Is it on the level of child ####?

One time we were doing a quick google search on a babysitter we were considering using, just to make sure there was nothing alarming. There on page 1 of the Google results was a public Google Drive folder of revenge pron.
So not only was Google hosting it on their own platform, they were indexing it. Them getting high and mighty with Parler is just so much of a joke.
inB4 no, I didn't save the link and no I'm not sharing it.

With plenty of posts plotting to overthrow the government and kill people.
Here's the thing. Google runs Google. Parler went to these entities and asked to be hosted by them. Their platforms, their rules.
Parler could always try to become self sufficient or find other providers.

Whatever you're trying to compare, isn't remotely the same.

Google Drive is a personal file hosting. It was indexed because the Google Drive owner marked everything as public. What you just described is revenge pr0n, and it's illegal, and that person most definitely was pursued for their crime.
Google isn't thumbing through people's Google Drive accounts and indexing them to their site on those that are private.
That said, they ARE doing searches through for copyrighted content, child pr0n, and other illegal files that are easily traceable.
But again, what you're trying to compare...isn't the same.

so I have no idea what is in there. Could be nothing.
The others were old newsgroups; I had no idea anyone even used those anymore.
This guy posted 5 days ago; I'd bet if you checked that group in a week that post would be purged; he appears to be posting from Africa. I can really understand him, but I'm guessing he's not any crazier than say, the natrualnews.com guy anyway.
