My Christmas wish list certainly includes Bresee, XT, Davis, and Murphy all deciding to stay one more year. 3 of those 4 would make playoffs a strong possibility next year.

Thanks for putting it all in perspective. I was much more worried before reading the article. Sounds like DE is top priority, but I certainly would like the coaches to keep an eye open for a running back (depth), an offensive lineman (you never have enough of them), and a speed guy at receiver (someone who can create separation). But all in all, lots of reasons to be excited for what lies ahead.

Actually we can have too many offensive linemen. We lose one and have three commits. The key to a good team is to have depth at all positions. Remember the Bowden days at Clemson? We had a ton of WRs to catch all of those screen passes but not depth at other positions. This is why Dabo has a target number at each position.

The idea would be to get good OL's. Not development projects. There are lots of them out there who are already 22, smart, experienced and huge after several years of college. Plus, if these guys have graduated, Dabo will take them without going through some moral crisis. Seems like the skill guys transfer after 1 or 2 years and would be less desirable to Dabo.

When Dabo executes your idea of getting “good” OL from the portal, what happens to the ones we have who are on scholarship?

incoming Johnson to be Noble, ON the field as well as off it. I don't know if he is the guy, but we need SOME incoming wideout to be a "splash", on the order of a Sammy or Mikey. It has truly been awhile.

most impactful true freshmen receivers we've had were Sammy and Ross. After that, Nuk and Artavis were good as was Antonio this year. Most guys have taken at least a year though.
I agree that Johnson seems the most likely to break through however.

The problem at WR is that we have Tyler Grisham as their main coach as well as Tajh Boyd and Cole Stoudt as offensive development coaches. Now don't get me wrong all were great football players, and I love the "Family" feel that Clemson has....probably the reason we get the majority of the highly-touted recruits...but this doesn't make them adequate to coach players. Let them recruit...that's fine. But just because you're a good patient doesn't mean you'd be a good Doctor. It's time to seek coaching outside of the family tree...

I think suddenly all of our offensive staff may look much smarter now that we won’t have DJ sputtering, stumbling, overthrowing and underthrowing all over the field.
Tony Elliott went from a record setting coordinator to a very pedestrian one his last year because of our lack of options at QB. This year we had another option, but decided to self impose sanctions instead of trying the other option.

This right here. Our WRs are suddenly going to look a helluva lot better without all those poorly targeted throws from DJ.

Our WRs also seem to always have a tough time staying on the field. If they can somehow minimize that and we can play with a relatively full corps then I think the WR group will be just fine.

We really need a good wr like that fella from south Florida. I hope We've put the hard recruiting on him. If both Collins and ngata come back, I'd feel better. But We've missed the last 3 cycles on receivers. Hopefully noble will be good. Hopefully turner will be the burner we hope.
Disagree with David, we're not good at linebackers. We're one injury away from crap. Sorry, macquire- serviceable as a 2. Maybe he'd make another step... and then McCloud - may be good in another year. Tough position for freshman.

back there. There seemed to be an environment of colossal suck w/ the relationship of DJ and the WRs. Sure guys had drops (so did Higgins, Ross, Scott, Rodgers..remember how many he used to have) but there has no been no consistency in throwing the ball...it builds over the course of 2 years.
Take the first pass of the game the other night with Ngata being open, running his route and getting one in the dirt...you can see in the replay after that play of him looking directly to the sideline with a are you Bleeping kidding me look. Fotunately he ended up playing well but that stuff builds and we've seen it do so in many games over the past two years.

We all knew Coach wouldn’t change his ways even after the last two seasons. We’re hear about how much he “loves to win” so he’ll change but it sure doesn’t look like it. We lost 9 guys yesterday to the portal. 9. Yes, most of them may not have contributed but you never know when the team will have injuries.
I’m also not talking about taking a Hunter Johnson. To fill a spot. To fill a number.
I’m talking about going after the best. Sure, we may have the numbers when it comes to receivers but why not go out and pursue the best? It seems like the Championship game eased our fears but UNC lost to a Gtech team starting their backup QB. They also lost to NC State with a third string QB. Clemson is in the ACC. 10 wins is always possible. We’ll always be good to great under Coach Swinney but to be ELITE… we need to attack the transfer portal.
Go Tigers!

I don't really see college FB ever recovering from the way the NCAA has watered it down with this huge tank called transfer portal. I think building teams 2-3 deep with elite players that take over like in the day, and most guys were red shirted regardless of how talented they were when they come in....

The question is not where to look, but to know what our own players will do. If all our Seniors leave, that is one number but if some stay, that is an entirely different number. The NFL, the Portal, injuries and just real life make recruiting a very difficult job. We have 23 commits now and if they all sign, we have a big head start on the final number.

Excellent question. The guys leaving us for the portal are highly talented guys who aren’t good enough for the 2-deep here at Clemson. My guess would be they’re are more talented than most in the portal by getting a scholly here in the first place. So the staff has to compare talent level and fit among incoming recruits, upcoming backups ready to emerge already at Clemson, and the portal guys.
I agree with Dabo that our best option is recruiting incoming freshmen mostly with only a spot pickup here when unforeseen shortages at a given position happen. You get them for up to 5 years to develop and continue the great winning culture established here at Clemson
I guess I just don’t get all the passionate hoopla for getting in the portal. I think a lot of it is FOMO because when you cull out the less talented and those who aren’t a good fit, there’s not a lot that will help. And those who can will only be short-term in nature vs an equally talented HS recruit for 3-5 years

I'm with you 100%, I just think people are tired of Dabo's near-outright refusal to use the portal.
I think recruiting and developing guys is the way; the portal to me is most beneficial to new head coaches to try and infuse some talent into their programs. There are some impact players there, but I would say for Clemson focusing on role players would not be a bad way to go. You could try and find a shifty slot WR or a burner who could make plays downfield or an experienced CB, but those guys don't necessarily need to be former blue chippers.
Anyway, I think the portal could serve a purpose if they're smart about it. I'm just not a huge fan of blanket statements and just a general refusal to engage in something that could be helpful at times. Do I care that much? Nope, but I think a head coach should utilize all the tools at his disposal to fill out the roster, even the fringes of it.

But when we have glaring weaknesses - like the O-Line - better to use the portal because Freshman aren't always physically mature enough to meaningfully contribute. Everyone on here knew last year's O-line was terrible, and they still didn't bring anyone in?

So...
Dec 6, 2022, 11:40 AM
|
|
Hhhmmm.... so the sky is not falling and we don't have 20 extra scholarships just laying around? That isn't going to go over well with several of the regulars here.
What I find interesting is I keep reading comments on these boards and hearing Clemson fans on call-in shows talking about how the 9 (so far) that have announced they are entering the portal aren't really hurting us because he didn't play much, or he was garbage, or he stayed hurt...
... and YET, these same folks think that there are genuine upgrades just crammed in the 1,000+ kids in the portal. These same kids who didn't play much, where garage or stayed hurt at their PREVIOUS location, are now going to be world-beaters for us?
If there is a LEGITIMATE "diamond" out there (kid leaves because his coach left, kid left because he wanted to be closer to family, etc) then I am all for recruiting them and trying to land a couple kids via the portal.
But there's a reason they are in he portal in the 1st place.
I rewatched the Clemson-Louisville game after seeing it in person. I was stunned to hear the announcers say time and again, that so-and-so for Louisville was a transfer from such-and-such. Must have heard it 6, 7 or 8 times. They have transfers starting all over their roster.
That led them to a 6-4 season, a 31-16 loss to us, and their coach skipping town for CINNCINATI.... marinade in that, folks.
Go Tigers.
