What if question about the onside kick

Dec 7, 2015, 9:48 AM

Let's say there had not been a flag for offsides...but a flag for targeting on the heels. The heels recovered the ball. Would there a re-kick? Or would it be heels ball 15 yards back from spot of foul?

Since no recovery had occurred at the time of the foul

It would've been 15 yard penalty and a rekick

In effect we would get to choose

Had we recovered the kick (and the targetting been called) then we could choose to both keep the ball and penalize the Heels since it's a personal foul.

Seriously? Given the officiating the rest of the game?

I can just Jeff Heaser (referee) saying "After the play, personal foul #42 UNC... targeting. The ruling on the field is the ball was recovered by UNC..."

Not saying it's "correct" but when did that stop this officiating crew?

Well, those aren't the sort of mistakes they were making

They may have missed a crap-ton of holding (they did, seriously not a single offensive holding call all day), but they didn't seem to mess up any procedural situations. Some weird no calls, but they weren't making up rule enforcements.

If the kicking team kept the ball after targeting, then the kicking team would nail the kick receiver every time.
