What makes a player come to or stay at a school?

A son of my best friend is a highly sought after recruit who is considering WI, Oregon, Georgia, Texas Tech, TCU and FSU. He attended Dabo's last camp and said that our staff does it better than ANY of them. Even though he knew he wouldn't get offered, every coach knew his name. Dabo came up to him, called him by name and asked about specifics in his life. However, culture is not his #1 factor for where he wants to play ball, nor for his friends who are getting recruited. It's Money. He said it's not even close. And I guess it's not surprising. This is a smart and humble kid. The fact he's putting money first is not a knock on his character. He simply knows he may not make it to the next level, and that college ball may be his career.
He said the second most-important factor for the guys who he knows in this class is to play where the spotlight would be on them. And NOT from a media standpoint. He was referring to the team spotlight. In other words, would I be the best position player on that team, or the most important player in the system? Am I second best? Third best? He said it matters. It's not even, "what does this team need." I guess that's a team need, and kids today are more into their own needs.
This is a kid who you've seen featured three times on ESPN and has 5 national H.S. player awards since his Sophomore year. An outstanding young man. A stud. He's become friends with a lot of coaches, and players in the upcoming recruiting class. And he told me that most kids today don't have a "favorite" university. So what fans see as "the perfect fit" rarely conflates with their stack of criteria they're considering.
I found it interesting. And I'm pulling for this kid to get paid, and to get the spotlight shown on him. Wherever he goes, they're getting one of the hardest working, principled kids I've ever known.
I wonder if those already in the system (like Wesco) think the same way?

1 Timothy 6:10 states, For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs..
Having money isn't evil. Loving money/wealth more than anything else leads to corruption and to lack of focus on other things in our life. Loving money consumes one's soul.

It’s all bout green stuff. They care nothing for where they play. We pull for them and for Clemson They play for the check and really care nothing for the program. Final observation college football is over

It def stinks! But the kids are sincere (at least this one) about loving the game. And he's a great player. But his priorities are not the same as fans. I get it. But it stinks.

He wants to be well-compensated for the job he does, and he wants to have an opportunity to shine there while making a meaningful contribution.
The money is not the only factor, but it’s the most important.
That sounds like the priority list for adults in general when it comes to their job. Unfortunately, many fans call it greed and ego when talking about college athletes, but have no problem justifying it when it comes to themselves in their career.
Lots of hypocrites out there for sure.

Why would a player be any different than any of us? I didn't come to dear ole Clemson to be loyal to the school all my uncles graduated from. I came for the hopes that I could earn a better living with a diploma. If Coot U had offered me $100k to finish there 45 yrs ago, I'd have jumped in a millisecond. You wouldn't have?

Wow, thanks. No surprise to me. But hopefully an eye opener for some.
I've heard the same thing from a couple kids that camped at Clemson. And had teammates that were getting recruited highly. Now one was a legacy Penn state and was going there just to be on the team... even though he knew he'd never play. Anyway, point being, they said stuff like facilities and culture was nice but wouldn't be a determining factor. They actually laugh at some of the media stuff that's printed because they know it's bs. It's kinda funny to me just to listen to them from afar.
Why didn't the kid get an offer from us? No money, or position?

My Friend, we as adults have failed these kids immeassurably,

for we have allowed the entire system to become corrupted, all for the sake of pride.
Pride that reeks of conference and national titles, names and likenesses splashed across TV screens, papers, magazines, you name it. The youngsters see dollar signs rather than an esprit de corps, which made college football one of the greatest sports of all. Pride in one's school, fellow students, the staffs, teammates. Now, it's not about running down the hill or seeing the old ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech come cruising onto the field or Chief Seminole tossing his flaming spear or even Miss Cocky herself wiggling and cackling through the smoke into Willy B. It's "how much money is in it for me?"
What have we done? Failed to get a grip on this beast from the get go. Failed to demand tight controls over this NIL horsemanure. Failed to bring the NCAA to task for the abject stupidity of the new transfer rules. Failed to demand caps on salaries. Failed to get a grip on the avaricious exploiters of our athletes and universities. Failed to understand the basic job of our colleges and universities is to educate. educate and educate. And so on ad nauseam.
And now, we are paying for it, and our young folks are the victims, not us.

It's a shame. There is less and less connection between player and University every day. It's not the players' fault. It's the fault of the people running the sport for they are no less greedy.

Lost interest in football for all the reasons you laid out. Hope boundaries come soon or the whole thing can implode for all I care.
