My very elementary understanding would be....

1. QB sees defense and says, "This guy should be open. The only way the D can cover him is if they do this. If they do that, then this guy will be open."

2. He snaps ball. If option 1 is open he throws it. If defense does what he said they had to do to cover option one, he throws to option 2.

3. If they totally confuse him, he throws it to the cheerleaders and lives to fight another play.
