Wierd stuff in the golf program
Apr 7, 2014, 7:29 AM
|
|
This was the second straight tournament where a player has had to withdraw due to illness, leaving us to have to count all four scores of the remaining players. That hardly ever happens, and now its happened to us twice.
I see where Provo didn't even make the trip. This kid was the top high school prospect in the country, and after 18 months he's not even playing. I'm getting tired of seeing excellent prospects regress after we get them on campus. Kennerly hardly plays any more, and now it seems to be happening to Provo. The practice of trying to change player's swings seemed to start when we hired an assistant golf coach, and we haven't been worth a crap since. I really don't care if a kid has some funny positions in his swing as long as he can play. Just leave the kids swings alone and let them play.

English is apparently not your first language, although that's never stopped you from making inane comments. There was no reference to Penley at all, much less a suggestion that he be fired.

what i find amazing is it is ok for anyone that wants to come on here and bash coaches and tell anyone who will listen the way it "should" be done but when i have the audacity to question their knowledge or motives i am somehow someone that is a pumper or just love everything that coach may be doing. nothing could be farther from the truth. i disagree with coaches all the time. but my philosophy is players play, coaches coach and administrators hire and fire. that is what they are paid to do. my guess is penley, leggett, dabo, brownell and every other coach at clemson has forgotten more about their sport than anyone on this board. but hey, bash away at poor little de. i can take it i assure you.

I think what deroberts may have been trying to say, less diplomatically, is that when you critique the program, the players, or his assistants you are critiquing him by proxy. Penley is certainly aware of any of the issues you are expressing. You yourself commented on how unusual the situation was. Perhaps it is just a really unusual situation. Does someone always have to be to blame? If your post was more along the lines of "does anyone associated with the golf know why so and so isn't playing or playing more" that would be one thing. But you noted your disappointment with specific players then hypothesized that an assistant coach was to blame. That is certainly an attack on the program and any attack on the program is an attack on its head coach.

That's a fair point, but I'm not the only one commenting on that subject. Arnold Palmer was quoted as saying that the problem Sam Saunders had at Clemson was that he was "listening to too many people". I'll take the King at his word.

I certainly wouldn't argue with him either. And that mentality is why a lot (if not most) truly elite golfers (and baseball players) choose to skip college and go right to work. Specific to golf if you go pro you pretty work exclusively with one coach. As a member of a college team you probably still retain a personal coach, plus have a head coach, and now an assistant in your ear. It's not ideal but probably more a criticism of college golf than Clemson in particular. However, within the world of college golf, I have confidence in Coach Penley. If there is a problem with an assistant I'm quite sure he'll do what is necessary. College golf doesn't get the media scrutiny of other sports so really unless you are an insider anything else is pretty much blind speculation.

deroberts does not have a first language. he is just clueless. he will only continue along the lines of these same mindless posts. just ignore him, as difficult as it may be and hope he fades away. I am glad others are beginning to see him for what he is.

only proving to every one how clueless you are every time you write something. but thanks for the validation. you would think at some point you would step back and say maybe all these people have a point, but it doesn't seem to be even a thought in your mind. keep up the posts!

"I bet you break 90 every time out"
So only people that can break 90 are allowed to critique/question what's going on with the golf team? I haven't been north of 90 in 5 years now, am I allowed to say anything?
Also, anyone who cannot run a sub 4.5 40 can't critique the football team.
Anyone who cannot hit at least .200 can't critique the baseball team.
Anyone who cannot run 5 miles in less than 35 minutes cannot critique the soccer team.
etc.

So you must also run a 4.5 if you are legging out a bunt for a hit. Congrats that qualifies you to comment on two sports.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do . . . . by a considerable margin, not that it's any big deal to break 90.
