Thoughts on Dabo's mentioning the NC in public?

At first I thought he was setting some Clemson fans up for a big disappointment. One loss and the season will destroyed for some. I know there's several here who hold that attitude.
It's risky business for a Clemson coach to have 'national championship,' on their lips nowadays with the SEC having won so many of the last ten and Clemson having scheduled two top ten SEC teams.
After careful consideration I think Dabo made a deliberate and calculated statement regarding a NC run. I think his primary goal was to convey to prospective recruits that Clemson has just as much a chance at a NC as any SEC team.
Be it true or not, after the statistical trouncing of LSU's D and O Dabo's statement had merit.
The truth is, it takes three things to have win a NC. It takes a team, a pretty good strength of schedule and some luck. The team consist of talented players who have had skill developed by good trainers and a good coaching staff. Having an excellent home field and stadium doesn't hurt either. We won't know about this until sometime during our first game, UGA.
Our strength of schedule is great this year if FSU, SC and UGA do not fall on their faces. We also have a great length of time to prepare for both SEC teams. The Citadel game precedes SC.
The unpredictable here is luck. I've heard that luck is a companion of those who work hard and remain diligent.
All that said, a NC is within grasp and Dabo's goal is practice not that any of that has anything to do with my point.
Clemson is one of the dozen or so teams that can entice a player with a NC hope. The others have to use cash.

And living proof that having a SOS isn't.

I agree. Strength of schedule is not a requirement for a BCS championship, at least not an appearance. ND had a fairly tough schedule, but not as tough as it appeared in the pre-season. Next year, Ohio State plays at Cal early in the season, but they're hardly a power house. They finish the season at Michigan and that's it. You can't tell me that if they run the table (very likely) that they won't at least play for all the marbles. I also think that Clemson can play for the NC, but neither team can afford to slip up.

Dabo has every right to talk this way. We went 11-2.

We lost to two Top 10 teams and we smashed another one in the mouth (if anyone saw that game and can't admit that beat them way worse than the score shows, they just have an agenda). We saw what our defense is capable of against LSU. We saw what our offense is capable of against LSU. I see no reason why Dabo should shy away from lofty goals.

CT, I understand in your unending haste to bash the coach

that you might not take the time to read something that might sound positive (I mean really...who has the time?), but my point isn't that we were close to NC quality this year (although I could argue that we were as close as anyone...I don't think anyone would have beaten Bama on 1/7 the way they played). My point is that our resume after this year justifies Dabo's ability to talk in those terms. It's not a joke for Clemson's football coach to be talking about how we'll win another National Championship.
Sorry my optimism offends you. Wait. No I'm not.
