We waited for years for a freshman to come in who lived up

Jul 8, 2015, 6:35 PM

to their hype and year after year we were disappointed that it took them another year or two to come close to their potential. Maybe William Perry was one of the first to really contribute like many thought he would. We had seen other teams, like UGA with Hershel, do it, but ours never seems to live up to it. Then we got Sammy, and quite honestly, I was thinking that he would be like many others and take several years to mature....wrong. Then Scott and Watson.....wrong again....both proved to be the real thing out of the gate.

The question is......... do you think maybe we are starting to put too much stock (or expectations) into incoming freshman like McCloud, Cain, Wilkins, etc.? Or does history show that these guys need more experience (and time) than maybe us fans are willing to give them?

Think it comes down to the talent we are recruiting now. Was a LONG drought between Ford & Swinney. When you are consistently recruiting 4 & 5 stars some are going to inevitably make a splash the minute they step foot on campus.

Speed can't be taught. The power of the first step can be developed and running fundamentals can too. Speed is there or it isn't. Even The Fridge's speed was one of his best attributes.

I think those players mentioned can show their speed from the gitgo.

Now Watson, Watson is a different critter. His abilities are highly developed already. His 'instinct,' it attributed to that, imo. I don't think he will develop much more. That's not a downside, he's certainly the best in the country right now and I'm not expecting anyone to catchup to him before he departs college ball.

Cain & Wilkins = instant impact. Jmho.

One on offense and one on defense. McCloud III will need the extra time, but will be a monster by his sophomore year.. Again, JMHO. Feaster will be a "man among boys" in 2016....so will Zerrick Cooper. Cooper and Feaster are special athletes....like DW4.

I concur X2000 - I'd say McCloud contributes this year though. Somewhere along the lines of 600-700 yards combined rushing & receiving

little disappointment by placing too much emphasis on incoming freshmen making a big impact, when we have had some great athletes come in and take two or three years to develop"? Do these guys coming in have these same expectations.... Or should our coaches downplay (to them) how much they will be able to help, if indeed they think that is the case.

Nuk wasn't too shabby. Ellington ripped Ds apart when Spiller was sidelined.

Peak had a nice freshman campaign considering we had Watkins, Nuk, Ellington and Dwayne Allen as other options.

Blanks was an All-American. 3-star Wiggins didn't do too bad for himself either. Kearse made some big Ints; most notably against OSU. Mack would've started had it not been for his injury.

Choice became our number 1 back before his injury.

Then there's DW4, higher passer rating than Marriota.

Our guys will be fine.

If Hyatt and Fruh or any other Freshman see significant playing time, it's bc they will have proved our best option at their respective positions. And considering our depth across the board, that's something I'm more than okay with, should it happen.

yep....all those guys were good and did some great....

Jul 8, 2015, 8:41 PM

things, but we have had a load of those guys. I am really talking about guys like Watson, Perry, CJ, Watkins.... Who lived up to and beyond expectations. We have had plenty of guys that came in, played well, and exceeded their expectations, but were not seen as elite game changing players before they came.

Are you sure you're on the right board?

This seems to be an interesting post related to Clemson football?

We're doing a #### fine job on all fronts in football...especially considering the fact this freshman are making such an impact.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep...I agree we are doing an outstanding job. I just don't

want our fan base to put more stock in incoming freshmen because we have had a few that have contributed greatly right off. I think coaches, in general, understand that the vast majority of freshmen are not going to be impact players right away....even the ones that the fan base think are!

You are looking at the wrong group. The ones I hope contribute is Hyatt and all the freshmen across that o-line. That is where the championship will reside.
