We try our best to schedule good non-conference opponents.

As has been posted here numerous times recently, we had several teams on our schedule this year who were NCAA Tournament teams last year who had disappointing seasons this year. That’s out of our control.
We don’t control who we play in non-conference tournaments. We try to get into the best ones we can.
This notion that our coaches purposely try to schedule bad opponents is ludicrous.

Again, you misunderstood. I said maybe we should, not that we actually do. Always cool off a bit before posting please. If we had beat SC, Loyola of Chicago and not lost to Louisville we would not be having this conversation.

i agree they are not the best Clemson team ever. Right off the too of my head I can definitely think of four but they are tied for most victories ever at the conclusion of the ACC Tournament and that is a significant accomplishment.

No previous coach played a rotational schedule against of 20 games against a 15 team league. So it really isn’t particularly meaningful. The only way to make it meaningful in relation to previous coaches would be to control for SOS. If you did that, this season would become particularly unimpressive.

Here’s all the data you’ll need. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/clemson/men/
We’ve won 23 games against a very low SOS. Prior to Brownell (who has been the beneficiary of a few seasons this poor in SOS) you have to go back to Shyatt to find such an easy schedule. Purnell won 22, 23, 24, and 25 games in consecutive seasons all against a higher SOS. Barnes and Ellis won 23 or more against much tougher schedules. This year’s ACC mark was .700. Ellis twice finished the season at .714. Those teams both played everyone twice. In 86-87 Clemson finished second only to undefeated UNC and six of eight ACC teams made the NCAA tournament. That would be the equivalent of 10 teams making it this year. We’re looking at half or less of that number making the tournament this year.

We played tournament teams Iowa and Penn State. As well as Towson who had a good year and finished 3rd in their league. I think the formula dings teams way too hard for playing teams lower than 300

Isn't losses to them and SOS actually 2 different

metrics in the NET formula. If we schedule name brand teams who have been, and should be, reputable but fall on their faces this particular year be our fault. Everyone is right about the losing part hurting but SOS is a double penalty in cases like this.

Does anyone think BC is actually 168?

They were a game below .500 in the ACC. Beat UVA as well, won at WF, beat VT twice, lost by 1 vs Duke and by 8 at UNC. It’s just further shows the entire rating system is a farce. And as bad as UL is - they still have talent and no way they are actually 300+. The whole entire system has been gimmicked and is a failure of major preportioms and needs to be abandoned.
