Football program. It is very interesting and describes a new model in which the GM operates the team as an NFL prototype. HS recruiting is seen as the draft and portal recruiting seen on the same level is handled as free agency program. This seems to me that which Clemson is going to have to do to survive and compete. We must have a top notch QB every year even if we have to like most others get him out of the portal.

University of Utah hired the Assistant GM for the Sacramento Kings to build out their basketball program. This model is gaining steam in college athletics. Texas Tech is very proud of their current status of having top 10 ranked football and basketball teams. No doubt fueled by a pro sports model with NIL backing that rivals only Texas.

For crying out loud man, we havent had anyone transferring out!

Where the he|| have we needed any transfer starters?
The best portal guys aren’t transferring to be depth either.
When someone brings in a top notch transfer, it’s to fill a hole vacated to replace a guy who transferred out, or to fill a hole made by natural attrition and you’re not happy with the guy moving through the ranks to fill that slot.
We’ve lost one starter ever to the portal and we’ve had the best retention in all of America!
I’ll say it as many times as needed and everyone I read these portal posts.
The portal isn’t magically transforming any teams. The elite have remained elite, and teams aren’t magically transformed because they’re having to replace transfers with other transfers. They may even be worse because of it.
And the best portal guys aren’t transferring to be depth in place of HS recruits. The players transferring to be depth may or may not be as good as a highly rated HS player, so why even bring them in? Experience? So tell me - if the guy was playing and gaining experience at his previous school, then why did he leave?

He doesn’t get that. He believes our backups that transfer out will never start anyway, and that the guy behind the starters lost to graduation are always the best for the job. We graduate 20 ish players a year but not a single one of those “highly developed by Clemson” players that didn’t start are any better than any transfer player could ever be.
It’s simply not possible.
No player will come to Clemson to ride the bench? One:Tristan is basically riding the bench. He’s not really even in the rotation. Two: Dabo said himself that we rotate a ton. Especially on D. Used to at RB. I’m thinking the last two years we haven’t rotated at RB is because….we don’t have two ready.
Mike believes he is right, and no other opinion is even possible. It’s just who/what he is, logic and rationale be da—ed.

The elite have remained elite by plugging where needed, to keep up with the other elites that are plugging where needed. Hunter Renfrow’s happen all over the college football landscape at every position. At every level.

Tristan Smith started wherever he was at. Diego Paris started at New Mexico State. The stories are endless about current studs that transferred to gain attention, development, and a chance at the big show. Do you really think back 6-10 years ago the d line recruits that came in couldn’t have started nearly anywhere else? Do you think Capehart came here thinking he was going to start right away? Highly rated recruit, could’ve went anywhere really. And started way before his senior season. You’re acting like these kids just want to play ball at Southeast Missouri State instead of getting a chance to go pro.
It is clear we needed D ends last year. PWoo was playing end. We need other spots filled as well. Dabo’s love for these kids is commendable. Heck it may even be the right way to go. A few years ago he said “we like who we got”. That is music to the backups’ ears. But it doesn’t win football games

We signed a starting DE from the portal.
Oct 15, 2025, 12:20 PM

Yet again, you hear transfer portal names at schools because they are there to replace guys who transferred out. When you have 10-20 guys transfer out, then you absolutely will hear transfer portal names on game day. There’s no choice.
We haven’t lost transfer guys. Not sure why this is missed by some of you.
There’s a contingent out here who seems to think we should be benching numerous starters simply to sign transfer portal players, as if they’re some sort of magic potion that transforms teams.
That’s just not so.

The “last year d end” meant that PWoo shouldn’t have been playing d end. Period. It hurt our interior AND his development at tackle. Dabo instead said “we like who we got”.
To say he has zero aversion to the portal is just not true.
You’re failing to answer the graduation attrition as well. Starters and guys who we have “developed” that graduate as solid backups. We replace them w undeveloped freshmen.
I’d kill to have Pavia as QB. Even last year I thought Cade still was too streaky. I guaranteed a loss to LSU to an LSU fan buddy of mine simply because of Cade. Had a feeling he’d come out just like last year.
It seems to me you think ALL of us want a complete overhaul. It’s just not true. We want clear holes plugged. Now, our transfer attrition WILL grow simply because of writing on the wall. Backups will see they may not start when that senior graduates. Maybe Dabo sees that and doesn’t like that. I can’t say he’s wrong, per se. But our recruiting isn’t what it once was. The decline is pretty clearly on the horizon.
And I’d like you to finally answer what you’ve avoided three times now: 2020 was NOT the most prolific passing game in our history. It fell 1000 yards short actually. And in 2020, a whopping 15% was from ETN. You use that false stat to bolster defense of our WR coach.

Why have they had to plug hole?
Oct 15, 2025, 12:25 PM
[ in reply to Re: For crying out loud man, we havent had anyone transferring out! ] |
|
Answer: to replace guys who transferred out.
That’s not a guarantee you’re getting better and in fact may end up being worse off because of it.
And then it’s funny, you hear the names of those who departed those schools, it’s supposed to be some sort of indication of the next team getting better? But wait, the guy who just left school X.. if he’s doing good at his next team then he was good at his last team.
Player A is a good player at Team X. Player X decides to transfer to Team Y. Team X brings in a portal guy to replace Player A. Team X now has Player B. Player A is starting at Team Y. So is Team X better now because they signed Player B? Maybe, maybe not.
Some of you just dont seem to understand what the portal is really doing. It’s filling holes left by guys transferring out. We haven’t had that, hence we’ve only signed a few.

Pavia transferred to Vanderbilt though they had just signed another transfer out of Utah. There was a QB battle.
You’re completely discounting the “needs” basis and the fact that lower tier players want to compete at bigger schools.

Yall are wasting your breath with this dude.
He’s literally Dabo. He’s the smartest guy in every room… even when literally everyone else is telling and showing him he’s wrong… he’ll double triple and quadruple down bc again… he’s the smartest guy in every room and nobody is going to tell him different.
Dude is the kind of person where when you say you done this… well he done it 10x better.
Just look at some of his statements. This one is my favorite… “What team has the portal changed? What team or teams has the portal transformed? Lol anyone saying something like that is completely lost and there is zero hope for him.
Let him make his statements… it’s his right. Just sit back and laugh bc believe me… the whole forest for the trees thing applies here 100%.

I agree with you Mike4. I believe that once you start using the portal to build your team, you will become dependent on the TP. Recruit’s will take notice and over use of the portal will affect your recruiting. Your program must portal in players who have already developed to a high skill level.
I think the way Dabo is trying to continue to develop and improve Clemson Football is the right way. It may take more time to develop elite teams unless you become a Portal program.
Do we want to become a FSU, Miami, or a program similar to these and other schools who are becoming Portal dependent to bring in talent. So far it’s been a bust a Colorado.
Bobby Cox built the success of the Atlanta Braves through the Farm System. Dabo is trying to continue building Clemson Football through recruiting which is CF’s farm system. Unfortunately 💰💰💰💰 has affected recruiting and use of the TP. In today’s environment Money means more to players than education, and development into a quality individual. It’s a greedy society we have become. 😞😔☹️

Brent was a huge reason (and arguably the most important reason) why we were so successful from 2015-2020. He is a great guy and I want to see him succeed at Oklahoma.
I’m not the only one here who feels this way.

I will add that I think the 2nd half of their season ends poorly. Their offense is very average and it'll be hard to win games with just your defense... Last Sat was the perfect example. They have a very tough schedule and I see 3 more losses for them.

AD GM Dynamic
Oct 15, 2025, 11:08 AM
|

Not sure where I am on the GM idea. I wonder about the power dynamic between AD, GM, and HC for that matter. Football GM will definitely cost the AD some authority. If the HC isn’t bought in on the concept, it’ll be a dysfunctional mess. Would there be a BB GM? Ha, that opens a whole new can of well… something.
Not taking a position here, just ruminating on the concept.
