Clemson University announces parking update for first-year and Bridge students

Clemson University will implement updated parking regulations beginning in Fall 2026 to limit on-campus vehicle access for first-year and Bridge students. The change supports the University’s ongoing efforts to reduce congestion and advance on-campus programming aligned with Clemson Elevate’s goal of delivering the nation’s No. 1 student experience.

Further details on the process will be communicated in the near future, and a waiver process will be available for students with demonstrated needs.

Benchmarking studies show approximately one-third of peer institutions already limit first-year student parking. Clemson’s data also indicates many vehicles brought by first-year and Bridge students remain unused for extended periods. The University anticipates the policy will help reduce traffic congestion and parking concerns while fostering greater campus engagement.

“This is a thoughtful, data-informed decision designed to enhance the student experience and allow for continued parking capacity,” said Doug Hallenbeck, Vice President for Student Affairs. “By encouraging students to stay engaged on campus, we’re strengthening community connections, advancing our sustainability goals and improving the parking experience for students, faculty and staff.”

The changes will also bring expanded transit routes, enhanced Nightline on-demand service and improved airport and holiday shuttle options. These initiatives are designed to make campus mobility more efficient and convenient for all students.

Clemson remains committed to creating an environment where every student thrives — one that balances accessibility, sustainability and a sense of belonging across campus.

Sure, as long the infrastructure allows it. Clemson is busting at the seams.

It's a bit much to tell the consumer (the old-fashioned word that used to apply is student) who is responsible in large part for funding all the development and growth that their increased costs now entitle them to less, not more.

Clemson ain't an easy place to get around, either. Having a car is pretty fundamental. You can walk a lot of places but not everywhere. Maybe the Cat Busses are better now, but they used to be rolling drunk tanks.
