Sorry Zoe, they didn't break the sound barrier (that would result in a very loud 'boom'). Those two guys look like F-20 Tiger Sharks (Northup Grumman), typically used in the states as 'aggressor aircraft', ie., simulate enemy fighters. Foreign countries use them, and may be here training with the USAF.
I figured it was Clemson AFROTC grads buzzing their old school, but the aircraft type doesn't 'make sense'.
Bottom line (tho): COOL AS HELL!!!
As we say in the AF: That's the sound of freedom!!

Serious, recent reports looks like the USAF and USMC are having problems keeping their aircraft flying due to parts and manpower shortages. One report came from Shaw. Pilot flying time and training has been cut drastically, and a high-ranking officer said that if we had to engage China or Russia air-to-air, we'd be in deep doo-doo and suffer serious losses. Sad state of affairs.

Tracking brother, and there are issues.
But seriously, if we engage either of the two (other) superpowers in any type of conflict: capability, quality and quantity of military weapon systems is the least of our worries.

When I was in USAF and many years thereafter, I used to believe the same thing. Today, however, I'm not so sure. Can't let hubris stand in the way of reality. Sorry!

Honestly not sure, as they are basically the same a/c (airframe) since NG updated the F5 and redesignated it to F20 for Foreign Military Sales a number of years back. But I made the F20 assumption as Clemson is a long way from the usual locations (Nellis, Yuma, Eglin being the primaries) where the aggressor F5s are used.
Bottom Line (#2): STILL cool as hell -which is what I should have just said along with "no, they didn't break the sound barrier" and left it at that instead of doing the 'expert, know it all, pompous windbag routine' ...
...for that I apologize (and Lord bless all those pygmies in New Guinea).
GO TIGERS (?)

That never happened. The F-5 is still an F-5. Going by the

planes described here, they most likely may be T-38s, the 2 seat training version of the F-5. The USAF has 508 T-38 trainers in service as of September 2012. Web searches tell me that the Navy still flies a few F-5s as a simulated enemy aircraft like they did in "Top Gun." But most of those are stationed out West.
