We are in serious need of another CB with size

Jun 9, 2016, 12:49 PM

I like Jamyest and think he'll be a really good inside corner, but we have a ton of small corners on our roster (ie. Dawkins, Trapp, Carter, Fields are all 5'9 or shorter). Even some of our taller guys don't have any weight on them (Edmond, Baker, Mullen are all in that 175 lb area). LeAnthony Williams will probably carry 190 lbs when he hits college so he'll be a good fit. However, we need another guy or 2 with some size. AJ Terrell and/or Deon Jones would be ideal. M Askew is not a big corner (more medium like Mackensie), but he's such a versatile playmaker that you'd take him regardless.

Because of our current roster make up, I would take those guys over Jamyest even though I think Jamyest is just as good of a player.

Why even post this?

Recruits have been known to read these boards. I think the staff will have us in good shape. I could see us taking 3 CBs this round. Jameyst Williams while short seems to be by far the most athletic and lock down corner in the nation based on what I've seen from the camp reviews and I think the only keeping him from a five star is size. Dude has most potential to be the next "Honey Badger" and I would love to see him in Clemson Orange.

Have you seen Jamyest play?

Jun 9, 2016, 1:04 PM

He is the best corner of this cycle. Size is not the most important aspect of being a dominant CB. His speed, acceleration and change of direction make him elite. He is also extremely physical. I'd love to have Jamyest in Orange. I also think we do take 1 more corner after that. I hoped it was Deon Jones but it looks like that front has cooled. Terrell looks to be the part and would be a great option.

Snowflake Basher........Out

With a name like Jamyest, he has to be good!!

Jun 9, 2016, 10:35 PM

Just reminded me of the old Smuckers jam commercials.

Agreed, he is a take based just off his first name. OP is off by a year, Dabo likes to have a small quick corner like Mack on one side and a taller more physical corner like Tank on the other. Mullen will take over for Tank, the top corner in 17 will take over the other side if things go according to plan. This is not the 50s, with a D1 strength and conditioning program a kid like Mullen should be able to put on 20 lbs in a matter of months. Todd Gurly put on 25 one Summer and he was already at 210. Mullen as our big corner with Jaymest on the other side would be ideal, then we have plenty of guys behind them to match up with anybody.

Playing corner is about closing speed, acceleration, and good/smart technique, along with the physicality to tackle and play the run. Simple enough right?

Mullen will bulk up! LeAnthony will be fine. Fields and Edmond's are fine! Play strong and stay on your man and read the QB and play the ball in the air well. 5 10 and up is perfectly fine at CB. You are nonsense!

All I'm requesting is for more roster diversity at CB

Jun 9, 2016, 1:41 PM

Much like at WR, you don't want to have a roster loaded with the same type of guys. We recruit different guys with different body types and skill sets at that position. At RB we try to recruit a fast scat guy, a bruiser and a guy that can do a little of both. Corner is no different. We already have several short aggressive guys and some taller finesse guys, but we lack big (relatively speaking) physical guys. I'm pretty sure our coaching staff agrees. That's no knock on Jamyest who I stated is a very good player. If we weren't so loaded up with legacies that are similar in size to him, I'd want Jamyest all day. However the post was all about filling a roster need.

So basically you're saying you're not on board with Dabo's offering Trapp and Dawkins?

Screw Calford.

I'm not saying that. I am saying that their presence on the roster though may keep us from ultimately getting an elite guy with a similar skill set due to numbers. I'm just expressing who I think we need to go after to make the corner position as a group more well rounded based on what's already on the roster.

I think our coaches know more about who they think would fit into our system. Don't you think? Maybe you should call em up and let em know they are doing it all wrong.

We've always had guys on our roster that I'm requesting

Jun 9, 2016, 2:10 PM

We just don't have them now (or in the near future). Breeland, Cortez Davis, Tank, and Chalmers all are/were that kind of corner. The problem now is that those guys have moved on and Tank will be gone after this coming year. We just have to replace those guys with similar type guys. I think the coaches and I are more on the same page than you think.

You may be right but whoever they go after will be the right fit for us.

So you're ok with it but actually you're not because according to you our coaching staff has mismanaged the roster or something like that....

So, you're asking Dabo for roster diversity. Coach Swinney and Mike Reed. YOU are trying to tell these guys that their CB roster has too many short guys. THE coaches that just took us to the National CHampionship game and is about ready to do it again. THOSE coaches. Come on, enjoy the ride.

You got a free agent pick up in mind?

Jun 9, 2016, 2:05 PM

Maybe somebody will trade us one?

Re: We are in serious need of another CB with size

Jun 9, 2016, 11:18 PM

Fields is 5'10, so while he's not very tall, he's certainly not tiny. When I saw him on the field, he certainly didn't look small.

I don't think we're in dire straights quite yet, but I really do wish we had recruited bigger in the past couple of years...

Overall we're probably going to face a lot of early growing pains in the secondary this upcoming year, however I wouldn't be surprised to see the guys come along pretty well as the year progresses. Obviously Tank is our most proven & reliable secondary starter, but Jadar Johnson was the starter at the beginning of the season and has a great deal of experience.

Another great thing in 2015 vs 2014 is that our offense was actually productive. In 2014, our defense was fantastic, but our offense was below average. This resulted in a lot of close games, meaning starters oftentimes playing all 60 minutes of the game. However 2015 was obviously much better on offense. We dominated several games, giving backups like Van Smith, Edmonds, and Fields a good amount of play on the field. Hopefully this will help the guys get acclimated a bit quicker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we had 2 safeties with size last year to no end....

Jun 10, 2016, 3:29 AM

just ask Bama's TE.

people put way too much stock in physical attributes.

I guess that's because it's easy to just read some numbers off a bio.

likely Dabo's out getting him some football players right now though,

and I doubt I'll even look much at their measureables...
