like eating a habenero pepper. About 5 years ago, it was about like eating a strong Kosher pickle.....Now, it is about like eating a fresh tomato......and I would say I have at least 6 or 7 friends my age that feel the same way.... GAMBLING IS NOW OK FOR ATHLETES!! Are you kidding me?!! If anybody wants to go to a sporting event, where there is a POSSIBILITY that the outcome is predetermined,I don't know who they are..When players look like they are more concerned with protecting their health and their future than they are winning the game....When refs make calls that look like they prefer one team over another...When conferences make no corrections to such officiating so that it appears they may warrant it....

Well, it may be about to implode....Heck, I hunted pen raised birds ONE TIME...and never even took a shot because it wasn't a fair contest....I fished a pond one time where the owner had fish feeders that came on at a specific time....never went back....

Somehow, the powers that be,better get this touthpaste back in the tube,or Ole Spud will not be the only one that loses ALL interest.

college basketball players from Boston College(I think that is where they played) were busted for point shaving. It was a huge scandal....SMU paying their players was a HUGE scandal...Art Schlichter gambling at OSU was a huge scandal...etc.etc. The bar has moved so far to the left of what is moral....that everything is just accepted as that is the way it is....If you want to pay big money for college tickets, college booster clubs, drive for a couple of hours to yell your lungs out, and then find it is acceptable for player to bet on sports....well, how long before they bet on their own teams....I am just saying it is losing its luster. I always knew that Herschel, and George and Famous Amos ALWAYS wanted to beat the crap out of CLemson.....NOW DAYS...I wouldn't BET the farm on it...

Very good post. NCAA guidelines for student athletes were violated a lot in the 70’s and 80’s and beyond. Now it’s pay for play outright. As a student at Clemson I never witnessed players gambling, but ncaa rules were violated during those times. Two probations based on what could be proven.

Sports betting is a whole another thing. The pro sports leagues have tried to limit the damage but who really knows the extent of it. Very bad for college and pro sports future now. It seems to be like pro wrestling now but with gambling!

There was also a time (50's-60"s?) where the NIT was a much bigger deal than the NCAA BB Tournament. Let that sink in for a minute. A mob gambling scandal that Manhattan, St. Johns and maybe the BC team you're thinking of, brought that tournament crashing down.

Good post Spud. Thanks for being honest. I have followed college sports since Frank Howard days. Man were those the days. Kids played their guts out for their school and a scholarship. Most set a great example for the young people. Today, they only want to play for the dollar. They are mercenaries not caring for what school they play for. My interest has gone down at least 50%. Something is wrong with our team this year and I think jealousy about nil is part of it. I have had season tickets since 1978 but I doubt I go back. Getting too expensive for this ole boy knowing a lot of the money goes to pay players to be willing to play. I was talking to a dad whose son coaches for Duke today and he said Duke was spending a lot of money obtaining players thru recruiting high school and the portal. It shows.

This says "professional sports only"

.... and when the sports themselves promote gambling as enhancing the enjoyment, then expecting players not to cross over the line is naive at best.

Most people probably participate in gambling purely for enjoyment. But, for millions of others, the primary motivation for gambling is greed.

And, for some, the pull of illegal gambling is the thrill of "I can get away with it." It's like winning a game. Instead of "I beat the opponent" it is "I beat the system. I proved I'm smarter than the system. I win." It's like the thrill of driving 120 mph on the interstate and not getting a ticket.

Players who step across that line are motivated either by greed or the thrill.

This is a “Come to Jesus” moment in sports, and I hope no one will be offended when I say it’s the same in our country right now. Things are changing in so many ways. Money and power rule. Being tough and dogged in your determination isn’t respected like it once was. Drugs are killing hundreds of thousands of our countrymen, more lives lost to drugs than we have lost in all our wars combined. The country is currently shut down.I could go on.
So, what do we do guys? I say we sit down at the table and negotiate. And say our prayers and be thankful that we live in the best country in the world.
And go back to amateur sports in college.

The same reason I don’t watch much NFL. The heart isn’t there anymore. They wanted a minor league NFL, they got it. NIL and the portal ruined it. The other part that kept my interest since the start of NIL has dwindled now too, which was watching Clemson fight to stay elite, now I see no fight ever; even to win at home.

Let the college athlete is powers that be figure it out; people will eventually get tired of paying the crazy high ticket prices, just so the players can be well paid, and the large donors will get tired of it as well… need to see a return on their investment. Once they realize the golden goose is gone, it may be too late to ever get the toothpaste back in the tube.

What is helping me is nil transfer portal mercenaries and the desire for money to play for a team now. We will just take the wins we can get now a days and not lose sleep.

I miss smash mouth football and playing with reckless abandonment. I remember Danny saying that we were as talented FSU but not as physical. He fixed that! I want to see us play physical, break face masks and get after it.

Our coach used to line up against us with no pads and knock the snot out of us and leave with blood.

Today hoot and celebrate when others miss a play - not because we made a play.

Perhaps many of us will just relish watching old games where football was a physical game and won by beating the other team.

thank disney for all of the bad things in college football, no more walk-ons, nil, free agency portal, kids having agents, almost monopolistic media rights to the sport (check out who is owned by them) and now student athlete betting - they even have their own betting site - espnbet. espn has been their propaganda arm for promoting these destructive changes to try to get the results they want - conference alignments, people being hired and fired and most people are too dumb to see that they aren't telling you the way things are, they're "wagging the dog", shaping the sport into the product that they desire.

When was the last time a college was able to put out a schedule for the entire season with all of the game times all before spring camp even started?

They have too much control over the entire sport.

Were it not for very generous family who let us use tickets, we'd never be able to step foot in DV.

I can only imagine what those family members might feel these days. They were donors long before the team started climbing the mountain, and have always been willing to be championship-level givers.

Problem is they're still paying championship prices for not championship results.

It's part of what could become a cascading problem for the program. We're not aTm or Texas with a loooong list of oil-rich donors with short memories and huge checkbooks. Or even SMU, for that matter. Not Penn State or Michigan or Ohio State, either.

My Son and Daughters business pays the Iptay. The business has been Iptay since 1978. I still purchase two tickets thru that membership. I plan to continue to purchase the two tickets for a while longer but have only been to 3 home games. I am not planning on going back this year. I may go to another game in the future but now I’m selling my tickets. I’m glad we had the good run as I participated to the fullest. Does not look like it is going to happen again under Dabo. I love the guy but don’t believe he is willing to be a Kirby Smart Ryan Day Mario Crystobal and the others that are going to take over the sport due to pay for play and having unlimited money and resources.

Two of my Clemson buddies who I would categorize as "die-hard" feel the same exact way. At one point or another all 3 of us held season football tickets, attended CFP games, and even the natties. We were "those" kind of fans/alumni.

But, like everyone else in 2025 we're all busy, kids, sports, life, etc...

For various reasons we've all opted to not attend a single Clemson game this year. We're only watching college football when there's nothing else going on. Yes, we've missed watching Clemson even on TV. That NEVER would have happened 5,10,15, 20, 25 years ago.

All the things you mentioned have collectively wrecked college sports. Greed ruins everything. Once people's Saturday priorities change it's hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube. 😔
