Alot of folks were worried that Garrett Riley was going to be so good and come to Clemson and turn around our offense real quick then leave us for a head coaching job. Guess that never came to fruition.

I just cannot understand what he sees in defenses that prompt him to call so many boneheaded plays. The "jumbo" package is not working, what stick with it?

Dabo / G.Riley both bear responsibility for excessive use of the Jumbo Package. It’s up to G.Riley to strenuously object to Dabo’s dimwitted obsession with the Jumbo package. High paid subordinates must be more than just ‘yes men’ lackeys. Their professional expertise is one of several reasons for the high compensation.
OK, back to the package. A Non-standard play for critical short yardage situations lose their surprise value when it is used so frequently in those situations. Opposing teams easily see the Jumbo package personnel changes and have plenty of time to make their own personnel decisions to best counter Clemson’s Jumbo package.
One has to assume that Dabo and G.Riley understand this when they send Peter Woods in to substitute for the far more versatile / far more dangerous O.Patt-Henry.
Thus, Clemson’s use of the Jumbo package has long ago lost its surprise value; it is now just a ‘we are so much bigger and badder than you that we’ll announce our upcoming play, and you still won’t be able to stop it.’ We had been attempting to compensate for poor X’s and O’s acumen by use of macho man brute force.
All well and good. Not really. Our opponents have, too often, stuffed our Jumbo package.
The good news is that we canned the Jumbo package … finally! … in 2nd half vs LOU. Hoping that Dabo / Riley don’t bring it out again ever.

Dabo loves his gimmick plays - they have his fingerprints all over them.
The only trick play that I like has been when we snap the ball and the offensive linemen don’t move. I’m not sure we’ve seen it this year, but we used to sprinkle it in every now and then.
Other than that, I’d rather see us play straight up than resort to some goofy backyard gimmicks that have more risk than upside.

If he ever wants to be a good OC he needs to learn to run the football. I do not care for passing to set up the run. Control the LOS and tire a defense out. We seem to make it easy on opposing defenses with inept play calling.

When E.Thurman went out for the year and W.Parks had to play as a walking-wounded, our Guard unit was simply not good enough to run the ball well enough to reliably control LOS.
Maybe next season #55 (maybe move to Center? Not confident that he’s got good enough feet for that position) and #50 (maybe he never fully recovered from his 2024 injury) will be competent as Guards -or- Center + Guard. This year, neither have been competent at Guard.
(*). For remainder of this season, the use of Brayden Jacobs at LG has been helpful as far as our run game. If both T.Leigh at LT and B.Jacobs at LG stay healthy, then our run game in final three games (Fur, GCucks, bowl opponent) should gradually keep improving as BJ learns the Guard position better. We will continue to struggle at RG, though, since our coaches obviously believe that a wounded W.Parks, a maybe wounded #50, and a just-not-quick-enough #55 are our best options.
(*). Therefore, our run game will not be good enough for us to truly control the LOS for each of our remaining three games. It sure won’t be good enough to play smash mouth vs S.Carolina’s surprisingly good DL.

Nice fellow but hope he is gone at year end. We need an experienced OC with a good scheme that works in the SEC such as Tim Beck of Vandy.

Job to run the Clemson offense and not have any say in position coaches after watching how things have gone here.

Dabo too locked into scheme instead an OC who calls right play for situation

The truly outstanding OCs are not limited to establishing effective schemes for the offense.
The great ones know what play to call in each special situation.
I’m afraid that Dabo doesn’t get this. Dabo is a great CEO type HC, but no one has ever confused him with being a great offensive mind. His best OC hire was the one that saved him his job I.e., Chad Morris.
Remember, Dabo entrusted the OC position in 2009 and 2010 to the (then) highly inexperienced Billy Napier. At that time, Dabo was fixated in scheme instead of excellent situational play calling. It worked in 2009 because Superman CJ Spiller stayed on for his SR season.
In 2010, despite having a roster with very good overall talent, our offense floundered. Dabo blamed it on schematic deficiencies. So, he fired Napier and hired another ‘scheme’ hire in Chad Morris.
C.Morris saved Dabo’s job. Dabo became even more wedded to schematic quasi-gimmicks. IMO, he hasn’t broken this habit. He’s not on the rocks yet, but Ckemson FB is headed there. I’m afraid that he’ll seek sanctuary by going back to his ‘ace’ in the hole I.e., another scheme-gimmick guy.

it's the same now as it was w/ Elliott in 2021.......Streeter in 2022.....and GR 2023-present. Looking back I'm not sure I or a lot on this board gave Streeter more blame than he actually deserved. TE, BS, & GR likely deserved some of the blame, but not sure they should've got the portion that they receive/received.
At some point you have to ask WHY? We've had a LOT of variables come and go over the last 5 years, yet one constant remains.
lack of recruiting, talent acquisition, coaching/development, etc..............ONE person can change that.....DABO!
time will tell if he's willing to do it after year 5 of the "fall"

Watching Saturday highlights. Did y’all know that tight ends are allowed to go downfield and catch passes? I wonder if Garrett is watching?

I seemed to notice recruiting get a whole lot better when he took the job, Wesco, Moore, Tait Reynolds, Leigh, and so on..If you want to lose these guys, then let's definitely make a change. Because from my armchair, I see an offense that plays as well as its Oline, and can be downright deadly when the pass protection holds up, or we get some push up front.
OK, I will stop.

We’ll pay Wesco and Moore enough additional money for them to stay with us. Riley or no Riley, these two know that our new OC will throw the ball to each of them. A lot.
Now, if Vizzina -and- Denson don’t each get a bunch of snaps vs Furman, then Wesco and Moore might get worried about whether Clemson will have a QB that can deliver the ball to them. I’m hoping that the good showing by Vizz in the SMU game would give them confidence that they will be show cased again in 2025. Again, whether or not Riley remains with us.
