Walker Course info

Jul 30, 2015, 11:15 AM

Looked on the website and couldn't find anything regarding rates, didn't know if anyone knew what they usually were. Is it a good one to play or do you recommend somewhere else in the upstate area?

It's a great course to play. They are switching the greens from bent grass right now so the course is closed until August 15.

Are they installing Mini Verdi?

you can call for rates but I think the course is closed for now.

Looks like they are redoing the greens

I believe typical rates are $50-$60 for 18 and a cart, and that goes up on game day weekends. Student rates are $40 for 18. Great course to play, best in the area by far if you ask me. There are a few others around though, Boscobell in Anderson is a popular one, greens are always nice. Oconee Country Club and Falcons Lair are a few up towards Seneca, closer to the mountains so you get some nice elevated tee shots and such. Those three will run you about $30 for 18, if I can remember correctly.

The last time I played there....

which was on a weekend, I believe it was about $50.00.

It is a well-maintained and enjoyable course but a tad over-priced IMO compared to some of the other courses in the area.

No. 9 is an absolute bear (at least for me). It's a long par 4 dodleg left that requires an accurate tee shot just to set-up a lengthy second shot over water to an elevated green. There is a lay-up area to the right but even then you have to hit a really accurate third shot to have any chance at par. Bogey is a good score on this hole.

What other courses in the area do you prefer?

Jul 30, 2015, 3:22 PM

Headed to Highlands next week and we like to shoot down to Clemson for a round and a cold beer. My wife and I played Boscobell about 12-13 years ago and did not like it. Anything north/northwest of Clemson?

You need to try it now. Excellent shape, no need to move balls in fairway, and greens are extremely fast. Good challenge. I travel further than 4 courses to play there.

Ok thank yall, yeah I was trying to setup a tee time online and it said nothing available for the whole month. I thought "man this place must be great". Redoing the greens explains it lol.

Try Pickens Country Club, Boscobel or Southern Oaks....

Jul 30, 2015, 11:50 AM

Cross Creek Plantation and Woodhaven are a couple of other good options. Most of them aren't quite as nice as the Walker Course but fun courses none the less.

One of my favorite courses in the area is Cateehee in Hartwell Ga. It's about a 30-40 min ride from Clemson, but is a very fun course. I must admit that while I've played there a bunch, I haven't been there for several months.

Re: Walker Course info

Granted, I am slightly biased, but to me this is the best public course in the upstate among the best in the state. The course is extremely playable (except for number 9!), has beautiful views of the lake, is well run, and is always in TERRIFIC shape.

$50.00 to play this course is well worth it. Boscobel, Pickens, and Brookhaven, are the other public courses in the area and are not on the same tier as Walker. They offer some decent golf at cheaper prices but aren't close in terms of layout and shape.

As mentioned, they are currently changing the greens from Bent Grass to Zoysia. I am a little nervous because the greens were always in amazing shape. However, bent grass just costs too much to maintain. I am confident they will keep the new greens in great shape as well.

Play this course ASAP! This course goes toe to toe with even the most exclusive private courses.

Hit em well and Go Tigers!

I agree. The Walker Course is challenging but fun course to play.
Always well maintained. IMO, best public play course in the upstate.

Try to get on the Reserve at Keowee.

Other Courses

Jul 30, 2015, 4:23 PM

Boscobel is okay at best, but closest to Clemson. The Walker Course is a great course.

Cateechee (not private last time I played there) in Hartwell, Georgia is a must. There are also some other courses in Georgia not too far from Clemson that are very nice.

The Preserve at Verdae and the Furman Course in Greenville are good as well. I know Verdae just punched their greens this week though.

If you can know anyone that is a member of The Cliffs courses, try and get on those. Also Greenville CC has 2 courses and Thornblade are amazing courses, but very private.

Whoever suggested Woodhaven, that must have been a joke. Its a goat track 9 hole par 3 course in Pendleton.

I think he was referring to Brookstone. It's a good course. Also somewhat tough.

Rossguy is correct....converting to Zoysia (Diamond variety)

Jul 30, 2015, 9:21 PM

which is an excellent grass. It may not be quite as fast in the summer as some ultra dwarf Bermudas, but they will roll fine. They are also re-doing some of the tees and may be the bunkers...lots going on.
