Hampton/Newport News/Williamsburg/Norfolk/Va Beach
A high percentage of the top players in VA have come from this area over the years ... Lawrence Taylor, Michael Vick, Bruce Smith, Allen Iverson (Bethel/Hampton QB state champ), Tiki & Ronde Barber, Dwight Stephenson, Kenny Easley, Chris Hanburger, Plaxico Burress, Ronald Curry, DeAngelo Hall, Kam Chancellor, Dre' Bly, Tyrod Taylor, Terry Kirby, Percy Harvin, and many more.
Like Valdosta in Georgia used to be, Hampton and this area has had a high number of state champs through the year. Anyway, many of these kids are now staying home and playing for Old Dominion (formerly William & Mary of Norfolk through the 1960's.) Clemson recruits this area (Tajh Boyd, Sheridan Jones, Jordan Williams, Sherrod Covil, etc.)

...to play at Boone. Or NCState playing at ECU. Can't imagine our Tigers agreeing to that. It's a no-win situation.

ODU is located in the Hampton Roads region, which is Virginia's recruiting hotbed. Given that both flagship schools (UVA & VT) are a bit of a drive, it's probably a bit of a necessary evil for them to maintain a presence for recruiting purposes & try to hold off out of state schools

VT's non conference schedule is pretty much always small time especially with their state rival being a conference game. Amazing their record isn't better every year. They've had an easy crossover rival in BC also for years.

I would imagine it’s about the same as going to southern miss or ecu. Like another poster said, tons of talent in that area. Problem is, if you agree to that game, you need to not only win but win handily
|
