VB: Tigers take first ACC match over Cal

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson Tigers swept the California Golden Bears in a three-set match on Sunday afternoon (25-21, 25-19, 25-18). Senior pin attacker Mia McGrath led the Tigers in kills (14) and points (16), while junior middle hitter Kate Hansen dominated defensively, leading the team with six blocks. Following the victory, the Tigers improved to 13-9 (1-9 ACC), while the Bears fell to 6-14 (3-7 ACC).
The Tigers secured set one against the Golden Bears, 25-21. The Bears came out of the gate strong initially, but kills by McGrath and Ecem Aksoy quickly turned the tide for the Tigers, bringing the score to 9-9 before the Tigers took the lead. Cal fought to tie the set again with one ace, bringing the score to 15-16, but the Tigers quickly regained offensive control with a string of kills by Hansen and Sandt. Clemson dominated defensively as well, outblocking Cal, 5-0.
The Tigers led off the second set strong as McGrath and Moore put some distance between the two teams, bringing the set to 15-11. Two consecutive kills by the Bears tied the set once again, before Clemson regained control with a single kill by Hansen and two additional kills by McGrath. The Bears added kills down the stretch, but a single block and a kill from Nil Okur secured the set for Clemson.
Clemson took the advantage early on in set three, with a string of errors by Cal and a kill by McGrath bringing the set to 6-3. After they were forced to call an early timeout, the Bears notched consecutive kills to tie the set. Okur quickly responded with back-to-back kills, bringing the set to 10-8. The two programs traded points until the Tigers regained control with kills from Hansen and McGrath, as well as a combined block from the duo. Clemson extended its advantage by as many as nine points and closed out the set with a solo block and three kills by Aksoy.
