Van Halen versus AC/DC

Feb 16, 2018, 1:53 PM

Who you got? I'll take some ear plugs.

Remember that 1987 Chevy beater truck I got last year?

Feb 16, 2018, 1:55 PM

Back in Black hasn't left the CD player, and I own plenty of Van Halen CD's.

Love them both, but

Van Halen.

Van Halen, any day.

Feb 16, 2018, 2:00 PM

And I really, really like AC/DC.

AC/DC were far better musicians. Yeah, EVH had some skills

Feb 16, 2018, 2:05 PM

but you can only listen to so much hammer tapping before it gets old. Michael Anthony is a 5/10 bass player and that's sober. One of their better albums is cover songs. DLR is a better lead singer than Scott or Johnson but they kicked him out of the band and he was lame when he came back.

The Young brothers teamed up to create some riffs and hooks that VH would have died to have.

Love em both though.

You know...

Feb 16, 2018, 2:11 PM

That Wolfgang Van Bertinelli is a somewhat decent bass player. Not great, by any stretch, but he holds his own for sure.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That actually stands to reason, since his dad had

Feb 16, 2018, 2:12 PM

to play a lot of the parts Anthony couldn't handle in the studio.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey, question for you........

Feb 16, 2018, 2:15 PM [ in reply to You know... ]

looking for a new bass amp. In your opinion, what's the perfect size compromise between sound and portability?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I still really want the Ampeg SVT mini stack, but $600 keeps

Feb 16, 2018, 2:22 PM

pushing it to the side every time I start getting serious about it. The new Fenders are excellent, and the TC Electronic BG250 with a single 15" combo is what I'm using right now. LOUD, light as a feather, and excellent feature set, good enough sound for a stage amp all day long. Honestly, I will pull the trigger on the Ampeg if I ever get off my butt and sell the Washburn bass and Crate 50 watt amp I have...I just keep letting the lazy win.

TC Electronic. They run around $350, so price wise they beat almost everybody for wattage/features.

gracias. Might keep an eye on the list of craig for one.***

I would say the exact opposite, but it doesn't matter.

I like Van Halen's music better, but like you, love 'em both.

bass player (I actually heard this interview on the radio about a year ago):

For Eddie to say he had to show him what to play and had to teach him all those songs, that is the biggest line of ######## I’ve ever heard my life. I was in that band for 11 years, there was never a video camera involved of Eddie showing [Anthony] what to play. Eddie would tell him what to play once in a while, say ‘No Mike, don’t play to that many notes, just stay on one note, so that I could #### up and nobody would know it.’
…It was that kind of ####. Especially on the ’04 reunion tour: If Mike would have played any more than one note, it would have been showing that Eddie wasn’t playing the right chords again and again and again. I couldn’t sing to him, you couldn’t play bass to him. So that is a lot of ######## and I don’t know why they go after [Anthony] like that. He doesn’t deserve it. He’s one of the greatest rock and roll bass players ever, in the world. Michael Anthony is top five rock and roll bass player in the world, any bass player would tell you. Any musician would tell you that.

case. Who knows...I just know that I'm a rookie on the bass....I play guitar mainly and fart around on the bass just for fun---and I haven't seen the Michael Anthony bass line I couldn't learn in one sitting.

Vic's been with Sammy for over a decade. Was in the Bus Boys many years back (they were in the Eddie Murphy movie "48 Hours" back in the 80's).

picked up their live album a few months back. Lotsa strong Zeppelin covers.

They'd beat the crap out of those Van Halen pretty boys.

On a side note, I enjoy the musical stylings of both groups, and celebrate their entire catalogs.

it's really like 4 bands, not 2

Feb 16, 2018, 2:09 PM

1. AC/DC w/Bon Scott
2. VH w/Sammy (yeah I love Sammy Hagar, a true pro)
3. VH w/DL Roth (his supreme suckage live in concert drops him down)
4. AC/DC w/Brian Johnson

Bon is the winning edge here.

Speed Street in Charlotte eons ago. We were all excited about it and he was HORRIBLE. It did not help that he looked like a homeless guy at the time. I took him as one of my death pool picks for like the next 3 years in a row after that.

This video sums up DLR live for me.

Feb 16, 2018, 2:20 PM [ in reply to I saw the David Lee Roth Band on a side stage at ]

Two fun things to watch.....

1) at 5:10 when DLR is like "WHO WANTS TO HEAR EVERYBODY WANTS SOME?", and Dave Grohl is like WTFFF? We rehearsed Ain't talkin bout love!

2) In the middle of ATBL, when Dave just goes on some long yoga metaphysical monologue and the band is clearly getting irritated.

Bon Scott far superior to Brian Johnson.

Feb 16, 2018, 2:59 PM [ in reply to it's really like 4 bands, not 2 ]

Van Halen far superior with DLR over SH. SH was great on his own, however, prior to VH, and when he was with Montrose.
