UT is 6-5 in football

Nov 25, 2019, 6:00 PM

Both of them.

Haven't been paying attention, but what happened to Texas football? They're a bigger disappointment than South Carolina.

Texas was a consensus top 10 team at the beginning of the season and now LSU and Oklahoma can no longer claim them as a quality win. The Big XII can't be that tough.

Texas was over hyped big time this PAST off season. Just like alwaYS. Herman may be a better coordinator that HC. Some guys are

Texas is back though right? Their QB told everyone they were after their bowl win.

Pre-Season Rankings!

LSU is actually good. But, UT is the perfect example of how some SEC schools have gotten the benefit of the doubt over the years. They play a "highly ranked" team and beat them and it increases their perception. All the while that team they beat was inflated more than a zeppelin.

They have one of the biggest/l, far reaching fan bases in the country.

Scott Frost is finding out that Nebraska being in the Big 10 is an unwinnable situation.

Tom Herman at Texas has no such excuse. If he can't win there, he can't win anywhere in the Power 5.

Two "can't miss" coaching hires who are missing, badly.

I expected Frost to turn them around.

The Big Ten West is a winnable division, but Nebraska is showing no signs of improvement so far.

Don't like Nebraska; but I do like Frost!

Nov 25, 2019, 6:44 PM [ in reply to Re: UT is 6-5 in football ]

I think all he needs is a QB and more skill players that he has now on the perimeter! He will have to go the Chip Kelly Oregon route and get some 5'9 play-makers all the other schools skipped over. Just so long as they are dynamic with the ball in their hands! And kids like that get passed on pretty frequent if they aren't the ideal height/weight coming out of H.S. You know he will be able to get some big strong linemen. At least on Offense.

Herman at Texas - 76er I have said this before on here but answer me this: "Texas H.S. Football gets a ton of credit for being the Mecca of H.S. football". "So you would think they have kids waiting hand over fist to play for their state school, right"? "But, since I have been alive, I have never seen any school but Texas win a National Title. And Texas went from 1970 to 2005 between championships! IN short, I have always thought they were overrated!

Recruiting was supposed to be the first thing that Herman

fixed at Texas. Now, the polls are still open, but early exit polling suggests that he has failed miserably thus far. Either that, or, as you say, high school football in Texas is grossly overrated.

It's just "BIG" in Texas.

Nov 25, 2019, 7:14 PM

I don't put it above any other states H.S. football scene. You just have H.S. out there that look like small colleges! Whole towns that show up and so on. But, bigger doesn't always mean better! I respect H.S. football in Texas as of course looking at the population - you are just by numbers get players to college and the NFL.
I think Ohio H.S. football is better! "Just not as big"! California is in about the same category as Texas; w/o all the towns people showing up of course. It's not as serious in other words in some parts of California. Florida probably has the deepest talent pool followed by Georgia. Louisiana and South Carolina for states at around only 5 million both produce a good amount of college and NFL players.

Anyway - Herman will get more opportunities b/c he has breath life back in the Long Horns! Got them ranked high and "in the conversation". And, he beat Oklahoma last year!

What do Nebraska and Texas have in common?

Nov 26, 2019, 9:29 AM

Easy, they both had major success back in the day when all those big old corn fed boys could block for predominately running teams. Now that offenses (and defenses) are much faster, geared around sophisticated passing games, the Texas and Nebraska high schools are still producing those same big old corn fed boys, who are not going to get you the success of the past.

Re: What do Nebraska and Texas have in common?

Nov 26, 2019, 10:03 AM

Get a clue. Texas produces a whole lot more than "big old corn fed boys". The talent in tiny Nebraska isn't in the same Galaxy as here. Speed, power, QBs, anything you want is available. The difference between now and the past is recruiting is more national than it used to be and keeping talent at home is harder.

UT has enough talent to be much better than 6-5. For some reason, the program can't shake the softness and dysfunction of the last couple of Mack's years. If the talk of Herman and the AD being at odds is true, he won't be the guy turning it around.

Texas was living on their bowl win against UGA

They were garbage last year, and garbage this year.

Still pissed that Kansas gave away that game.

Tom Herman has lost the benefit of the doubt. Next year he is on the hot seat.

Watching the two consecutive conduct penalties late against Baylor was very telling. He doesn't have total control of the team.

It's always fun to watch UT fail. Good times.

There is now speculation about Tom Herman's job security after THIS year. Probably just a bunch of smoke.

However, if they lose to Tech on Saturday, I'm getting out some popcorn too enjoy the fun.

Texas was vastly overrated by the media the tend to focus

Nov 26, 2019, 10:12 AM

too narrowly on things like coach and QB and ignore other really important things like Texas losing 9 defensive starters.

Texas was top 10 in preseason polls but like 30th in preseason projections by advanced metrics like SP+.

I picked them to go 8-4 this year and apparently still overshot. Injuries have been a major issue for them this year though.
