Fort Sumter. I've been the Charleston a few times and I'm not sure what to do and expect. I'd like to know some of your experiences.

Fort Sumter is great. Also visit the USS Yorktown.

And a visit to Charleston would not be complete without eating at Hyman's. It's where all the locals eat.

10 is a good age. It will be a good memory, even if he doesn’t hold the details.

My wife and I got food poisoning at Hyman's the last time we ate there.
I don't hold any grudges, but it was definitely the last time I will be eating there.
I get bad memories every time I even drive by the place.

If you like BBQ make sure you go to Lewis BBQ. It is great. Great ribs and brisket, along with great sides. Have fun.

I second the nod to Lewis BBQ.
I have eaten there many times and always enjoy it!

My other suggestions:
Apr 13, 2021, 1:42 PM
|
|
Fort Moultrie
Fort Johnson on James Island (one of the sources of the bombardment on Fort Sumter).
Fort Wagner and Morris Island. Another source of the bombardment on Fort Sumter. This was also the scene of the assault by the 54th Massachusetts volunteer infantry (an all black unit) portrayed in the movie "Glory".
Check-out the USS Yorktown. Walking through the submarine parked adjacent to the Yorktown is pretty cool too.
Go see the Hunley civil war era submarine.
Take-in the South Carolina Aquarium

Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island is worth a trip

as well. Plus, some good restaurants there on SI as well.
Plus, Chief Osceola's burial site is at Fort Moultrie.

Definitely do. Only a matter of time before it’s completely pulled down as a part of the great re-programming. Also go to Fort Moultrie. Especially if you’re a history buff. Get multiple wars and some great sights and time together.

Kids that age enjoy the harbor tour & carriage tour and every gift shop along the way. Definitely have him complete the scavenger hunt at the fort-- https://www.nps.gov/fosu/learn/education/upload/Fort-Sumter-scavenger-hunt.pdf
Charlestowne landing has a small zoo, a colonial settlement site, a replica sailing vessel, and occasional alligators on the property.
The Angel Oak on John's Island is a cool photo spot (and another gift shop to explore).

Take E on a ghost tour. He will love it and there are several that take only a few hours while downtown (in the evening, of course). The bride was scared as he!!

Driving around the Battery is always nice. He may enjoy seeing the old cannons on display.
Speaking of cannons, the two of you may want to park and hang out on a sidewalk during a CofC class change if you are there on a week day. Jr will thank you.
Speaking of beaches, there are a few good ones in the Charleston area but the water isn't warming up quite enough for me just yet.
Speaking of warm, I recommend checking out Callie's Hot Little Biscuit for breakfast one morning while you are there.
I hope yall have a great time on your trip!
