No doubt the county admins did a thorough cost benefit analysis.

They spend $4 million/year on maintaining the grass fields. Maintenance costs for the new fields are estimated at only $1 million/year, so ideally they'll pay for themselves in 8 years.

Any chance the county will cut the maintenance budget to reflect the savings?

Well, artificial turf IMO seems like has had more injuries vs real grass. example like ACL tears

How about Greenville county schools give that payback towards pay raises for teachers?

One would think they have money to burn with all the new apartments, townhomes and houses going up.

Governments do burn loads of it, but not in the context you're using.

I read the funding was interest from COVID money that wasn't ever spent. I'm sure no one in G'ville needed any of that money before now. I'm glad there are no potholes or hungry people in Greenville.

The one at UNC does qualify as a high school field.

Dang had not even noticed they had changed to artificial turf. Guess I do not watch many or any of their games.

I recall attending a chilly Saturday evening game in Chapel Hill many years ago. It was a very close game that Clemson would eventually win. About mid way through the third quarter, the public address announcer told the crowd that anyone with a ticket stub to the football game would be admitted free to the Blue and White men's basketball scrimmage that was about to start. Their fans filed out of that stadium faster than a fat kid chasing an ice cream truck.

I've never understood putting any artificial turf down

If it's remotely capable of growing grass in said stadium. Some domestic even have grass in them now...
Why I don't like turf
*Causes way more injuries
*I honestly don't enjoy the esthetics of field turf and takes a little of my viewing pleasure away
*Why in the heck, of all teams, would Notre Dame have gotten rid of that beautiful tall fescue for turf???
*GRASS should be on all playing fields. Even if just a strip. Yep, I said it! Fight me
*Can't think of one good reason Greenville county schools need field turf...

This is an interesting situation. A lot of professional and college players are asking to do away with artificial turf because of injuries, but according to NFL statistics, there is little difference between injuries on artificial turf and natural grass. The HighSchool situation is totally different. School districts have added many more sports teams to their offerings, but don’t have the facilities for all the sports that have been created. Continuing to play on the same grass turf is not sustainable if it is to remain healthy. The cost to try to do this is huge. That’s why many districts are going with the artificial turf.

Because Brian Kelly wanted it, and the former AD gave him much of what he wanted The former administration also wanted to have some more events without worrying about tearing up the field (concerts like Billy Joel and Garth Brooks, graduation ceremonies, etc.) Many alumni want the grass back and look at other midwestern/northern schools that are able to keep it in good condition.

Don’t make so much fun. With Belicheck in town, got a feeling Tar Heels will be much improved. We have trouble winning there now … always a tough game.
