I'm continually amazed by the lack of understanding....
Jan 4, 2019, 8:13 AM
|

that many journalists and opinion writers have about "corporations". It appears that they believe that all corporation are publicly traded.
They take that belief and then take that view and make sweeping generalizations that are so far off the mark.
A few things to consider...
Less than 1% of corporations are publicly-traded
Less than 1/3 of non-farm jobs are in publicly-traded companies (meaning much less than 1/3 of jobs in publicly-traded companies)
So, the statement that 1/3 of the tax cut flowed to foreign nationals is patently false.
I work for a private company and took over as CEO on Tuesday. I can tell you, without a doubt, that the corporate tax cut led to more investment, more jobs, and higher wages in our operation. Just don't get me started on the tariffs though

All of our money is not flowing over seas. People in manufacturing are getting their first raises in 5-7 years because of the labor demand.

Not all metal stamping jobs are being / can be automated. Try to hire one right now or any higher skilled laborer for that matter. It ain't easy and the rate to attract them is steadily on the rise.
There had been a huge tightening of skilled manufacturing positions over the last 2 years.
What's been your direct experience?

You bring up a great point, sheet metal workers get paid fairly well, very well for a worker class person. And that is exactly the reason they will automated out.

I am saying any repetitive process, whether it me metal stamping or making a latte can and should be automated. We should not be doing these boring repetitive and often dangerous jobs when machines can do them better and cheaper. If this is your business, you should be looking into it.

except we had worked out deficit spending down to under 500 billion under Obama, we are up to 1.2 trillion in deficit spending now. Explain to me how that is the same?
Also explain to me how a party so hellbent on fiscal responsibility is running a deficit this high when the economy is strong? And why is it that we run the largest deficits under republican presidents?

We racked up $8.6 Trillion in debt under Obama. Under $500 billion, uh? He had two years of that and it was going back up, conveniently, and not so coincidentally, about the time ACA was coming due.

yes, in 2015 our deficit spending was under 500 billion, it is projected at 1.2 trillion this year. I know you are fully capable of looking this up yourself.
And that 8 trillion was paying off Dubya spending. It took him until his second term to get it under control. I mean this reminds me of when Clinton balanced the sucker and Dubya came in and blew a big hole into it. Going by recent history, I am unassuming a massive recession is next?

I get it..the deficit went down for 2 years then started trending back up, and you are trying to blame it on Trump who had nothing to do with 2016 numbers. Overall, Obama added $8.6 Trillion to our debt (almost doubling it), while having an average GDP of around 1.88 %.
There's no magic there; thats a pretty crappy outcome, really.

How is the GDP returning to 2%??....
Jan 4, 2019, 10:00 AM
[ in reply to The sugar high of the tax cuts have passed. Growth is ] |
|
Q2 18 - 4.2% Q3 18 - 3.5%
Total federal direct revenue in 2016 was $3,268 BB
Total federal direct revenue in 2017 was $3,316 BB
Total federal direct revenue in 2018 was $3,328 BB
Total federal direct revenue in 2019 is estimated at $3,422 BB
Actual federal outlays: 2013 - $3,454.7 2014 - $3,506.1 2015 - $3,688.4 2016 - $3,852.6 2017 - $3,981.6 2018 - $4,107.7
We have a spending problem, not a revenue problem.
As for economic impact of the tax cut, I believe we're going to see substantial wage rate growth in 2019 based on what I'm seeing in the market and what others I talk to are seeing.

just not as fast as spending.
But even in your flawed example....yes....it's called living beyond your means and we've been doing it in this country for decades.

Both sides of the equation need adjustment to reduce deficit

The annual deficit gap between revenue and spending has essentially remained steady through the recovery and subsequent good economic conditions. In good economic conditions, there should have been significant deficit reduction. Neither Obama nor Trump really acknowledged the risk of deficits nor wanted to risk their own political capital addressing them.
As global and US economies slow eventually entering recession, the revenue will be flat at best. In my opinion, the tax cut was several years too early ... meaning deployed later it could have deferred or mitigated recessionary trends.
Neither political party has the fortitude ( i.e political will with their respective bases) to really reduce spending. It is likely deficits will get worse with the upcoming recession. Essentially it will take another crisis to force any sort of meaningful spending constraint or smart tax increases.

reduced. Until there is enough agreement on that basic point and what part needs reducing, then the spending side will not change.
The full impact of the tax cut has yet to come. It will be end of this year/early 2020 until we see the full impact on jobs and wages, IMO.

I'll give you deficits though, since the economy is growing and wages are rising, as is inflation and interest rates. Spend exactly the same dollar amount as last year, and deficits will still grow from interest payments growing from a good economy. Double our rate of growth (theoretically doable) and we will spend more on debt servicing than on social security, or any other single item.
The fed, despite Trump's rhetoric, is doing exactly what it SHOULD be doing. If it doesn't, and rates stayed at zero like they did for years, we would be seeing a slide of the dollar, and that's the foundation of everything. The dollar gets saved at all costs.
