Two concerns moving forward

1) Dropped passes. Some of this could be first game jitters, but it's too reminiscent of a few years ago with dropping key balls. Less of a concern once Sammy is back, but we're going to miss Allen at TE.
2) Secondary. Some people saw this as the biggest concern heading into the season, and it might be real. However, the big mistakes were in the first half, so I'm thinking they worked it out at halftime otherwise, Auburn should have been exploiting it down the stretch. Fixing something at halftime makes me giddy. Some patience might be necessary here too since it was the first game in a new system. After a couple of tune ups, we'll know where we stand against FSU.

I agree on secondary. The drops are something we will get over as the guys have a good track record on catches.
I have always been concerned with the secondary. I hoped without steele it would improve and hopefully it will. they were out of posiotn a lot. A solid qb who can throw would have done more damage that Aub did. I expect Ball will test us here this week

I don't think dropped passes will be a trend. We have some experienced guys, and an OC who absolutely will not put up with that.
BV made a decision (I thought a good one), to take away Frazier's legs. He ocmmitted an extra guy many times, and dared Frazier to throw it. It put more pressure on our DBs, and he did hit a couple.
Frazier is going to be a very good QB, and not just with his legs. He threw for over 10,000 yds. in high school.

I think the drops were more of nerves and first game issues. Unless we continue to see them in next two games, I'm not too worried about this.
As to the secondary and the defense overall, I believe a lot of the issues are the result of not really knowing what to expect Auburn to do offensively, what their identity was. Venables even said they expected more zone read and that Auburn ran stuff they didn't expect as much. So I was comforted by the fact that we were more successful on D in the second half.
Ball State and Furman may not be "big tests" for our D, but I do think we will be able to get a better guage on defensive short comings in these games, and especially in the FSU game.
Overall, I think it's a huge difference now that the coaches have real game film to teach from and we should see some correction of these issues in the next few weeks.

...involves keeping the safety close. Y'all who know this stuff better than I can chime in there.
So, while we were waiting for misdirection plays that never came, our secondary was playing man. We got toasted three times that I can recall (thankfully one was complete but OOB.)
We'll see similar defense against Ball State's ground game. Let's see how much the coverage has improved over a week.

then under Malzahan at AU. I think BV was committed to not letting his legs beat us. I'm sure we worked on QB counter, trap, draw, etc... a good bit.
I feel like he basically said, "you can't beat us with your arm, so we aren't gonna let you run it."
I fully expect to see different coverage looks this weekend.

he may have but he wasnt much of a passer. I mean the lack of accuracy was glaring at times. Of course we still gave up the obligatory cheap one early on

I think some of the dropped passes were from first time jitters not butterflies but fear of being hit. That's how it looked to me.

Agree, way too many drop balls. Ford has to know, hes going be heavily counted on this fall and he MUST, MUST step up. ANd I think Bryant had some drops as well.
Also, I hated the way Auburn gashed our DL at will in the running game.Like to see the two new guys get more playing time (Watkins/Reader)-DL
Then theres the secondary...
Hall should be the guy at safety along with Meeks and Robinson is going have to show up at corner. I hate to say this buttttt.....some of our woes in the secondary might me....."coaching".
