Transfer port-o-let

Oct 27, 2021, 8:05 AM

Check out this 24/7 article. Interesting on who left who and who got who. Curious...who in the article would Clemson/you have initially gone after once they entered the portal? 2020-2021 transfer portal cycle had 2,646. The 90 or so players (many 2** and 3***) in the article represent around 3.4% of those in the portal. Like recruiting, it also looks like a crap shoot.

Instead of 7 walk on scholarships? I’d go after a number of those guys.

But at the time we should have gone after Dare Rosenthal and Jahmir Johnson without a doubt.

We shouldn’t have needed hindsight for that either, the staff should have had the foresight to know our line wasn’t going to be good this year.

There are a load of quality QBs that have hit the portal between 2018 and 2021 (After the mass exodus of Hunter Johnson, Tucker Israel, Zerrick Cooper, Chase Brice and Kelly Bryant).

Jalen Hurts, Tanner Mordecai, Hendon Hooker, Joe Milton, McKenzie Milton, JT Daniels, Justin Fields, Austin Kendall, Shane Buechele, Nick Starkel, Jamie Newman, D'Eriq King, Kaytaon Thompson, Feleipe Franks, Joey Gatewood, Taulia Tagovailoa, Anthony Brown, Peyton Ramsey, Phil Jurkovec, Tyrrell Prigome, Max BortenShlager, Re-al Mitchell, Jett Duffey, Cade Fortin, Tyler Shough, Grant Gunnell, TJ Finley, Charlie Brewer, Bailey Zappe, Alan Bowman, N'Kosi Perry, Anthony Russo, Bailey Hockman, Jarrett Guarantano, D'Wan Mathis, Jace Ruder, Luke McCaffrey, Gunner Cruz, Dylan McCaffrey, James Blackman, Jordan McCloud, Asher O'Hara, Jawon Pass, Logan Bonner, Garrett Shrader

Most of these QBs either proved to be capable QBs at their prior school or went on to or are currently proving their value at their new school. At the very least they provide important competition in their respective QB rooms. Iron sharpens iron. Surely we could have convinced 1 or 2 of these players to come and compete at a program like Clemson.

Problem is

those guys left for places they believed they would start. Since 2015, except for 2018 here, when has it not been clear who would start? A quality QB would have needed a crystal ball to foresee starting here this season

Not all of them. Some these QBs went to schools where the starter returned and they went to compete for the job.
