would've been #1 with a win. All they had to do was beat Navy to play for the nat'l title. Navy was bad and their only weapon was Napoleon(?) a great RB who was injured and out for the game. They didn't lose a close game, Navy stomped a mudhole in em. One of the most shocking upsets in CFB history.

Actually it's even worse than that. Before the Navy game, the Sugar Bowl had offered South Carolina spot in the game, regardless of the outcome against navy. Joe Morrison decided against it because he wanted to go to the Orange Bowl thinking he could play for the national championship. Then they lost to navy and wound up in the gator bowl.
