USuC's backup QB reinstated following suspension

By Ben Kercheval on August 6, 2012, 8:00 AM EDT AP
Not one week after being charged with speeding and driving after consuming alcohol while younger than 21, South Carolina quarterback Tanner McEvoy is back with the team. Steve Spurrier confirmed the return on Sunday via the Post and Courier of Charleston.
“Tanner’s back. He’s been approved to come back to the team. Do you know what he got arrested for? He told me … I think South Carolina doesn’t have that law. North Carolina has that law (about underage people not being allowed to drink any alcohol at all before driving). He got arrested for it, and he’ll pay his fine. You want him suspended for having a beer and he’s underage? How many football players would be playing if they had a beer and they were underage? But anyway, go talk to coach Tanner (athletic director Ray Tanner) about that, if we’re going to suspend him, OK? I’m not going to suspend him for that, all right? But I don’t know if he’s going to play anyway.” Probably not. McEvoy was expected to compete to be Connor Shaw‘s backup, but that’s about it. One would think any kid (or coach) getting busted for alcohol-related charges, no matter how commonplace they may be, would draw ire from Spurrier given the notable incidents involving former quarterback Stephen Garcia and QB coach G.A. Mangus. Instead, he appears rather jaded to the whole situation.

I just would pick different role models for my kids than a coach. Sorry, but the hypocrisy of guys like paterno, tressel, etc really spit in that birthday cake.

The law in SC is

that it is illegal to drink underage!!
So he should have been in trouble before he started driving. Spurrier is an idiot. What a DA?!?!
Now I know plenty of kids do touch the sauce before they are legal age, but if this dummy is going to make statements they should at least make sense.
No wonder he coaches at that other school!!

"Coach says it's OK to drink beer!"

I partially agree with Sack that it's not a major deal that a college kid was caught with a beer in his system.
I think it's a mistake for someone in his position to actually condone the behavior though. I think a kid is even more likely to have 3 or 4 or 5 beers if he's been told that it's OK.
Drinking underage and then getting behind the wheel of a car deserves something though - a few practices maybe, but something.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, an organization founded for the purpose of protecting families from drunk driving and underage drinking, will be very interested to hear about the casual and complacent attitude that two men (Steve Spurrier and Ray Tanner) in very influential positions have about underage drinking and driving.

If you are underage and blow between .02 and .08 in SC it is an automatic 3 month suspension of DL.
