Ha! Sitting here relaxing. Listening to jazz. And sipping on a Manhattan. I am like oh a Tony Bennett reference. Apparently not the legend.

Waiting until the preseason to resign was a selfish move that was really unfair to his players, the university, and the fans.
Maybe there is more to the story, as in something personal and private that played into his decision. I hope so.

This. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become "rejuvenated" and take a job with a P5 team with millions of NIL dollars.

Bad timing , but I disagree. I also think he might have been the best coach

He did more with less talent than any other coach. His teams competed with all those 5 star squads and more than held their own. He is one of those coaches like Don Shula. Another coach once said about Don - “ he would beat you with his team - and then could swap teams and beat his”. I suspect UVA would have a tough year, but I think they win at least 5+ more games with him on the bench.
The entire ACC stinks (except Duke and Clemson). Louisville is ok, but I don’t think they have a big upside this year. Simply beating bad ACC teams.

Think you are underestimating Louisville . They have been beating bad teams, but dominating scores. When they played Duke they had just lost their 2nd best player for season with an injury. Now that they have got used to playing without him they are a real good team. If they play Duke now it would be a real close ball game. That's why their NET and Kenpom is close to Clemson.

You might be right about Louisville. This gets to the core of what the horrible ACC does. There are just not enough opportunities to lay against good teams , so we really don’t know. We can speculate, but data points missing. The dance will reveal all for the 3 ACC teams. Are they good? Or are they simply good in the ACC? Will be fun finding out.

It was a calculated decision for Tony, it wasn’t a snap decision nor was it to screw his team

Certainly one way of looking at it.
OR
Ron Sanchez left his tutelage and became a fairly successful HC in his own right. Tony then brought him back on staff with long range plans. The players really loved Sanchez. Tony then retired at start of a season which forced his somewhat inept AD to give Ron a shot at running the program. Granted it clearly didn't work out, but that was unknown at the time of the decision.
It was all calculated

His players bought into him, not Sanchez, he left them little choice to make their own participation avenues outside of playing out the season, or sitting out the entire season.
It was a selfish decision, but he was failing in the portal era too.

They can buy into both. The move was calculated and done to try and leave the program in the best hands possible, which was Sanchez and not AD Williams.
The outcome doesn’t change the reason why it was done.

You are indeed correct. Tony knew exactly what he was doing and probably considered his team before he considered himself. I am sure that he felt it would be unfair to his team to coach them when his heart and mind were in a different place. I am also sure that he felt they would be in better hands with his assistant taking over than in his. It had nothing to do with winning or losing. Tony was one of the best coaches in the country and even a better person ...... period!
