C'mon Dabo, you're way too optimistic. Just admit it, you and the staff screwed up your recruiting and roster management. Great to know our new normal is relying on walk ons and legacy schollys.
Then again, you'll just yellow shirt the 3 we have and give them a spring practice pass... Afterall with such soft practices and praises for everyone like you do we'll be ok. In fact, just give all the current starters the spring off from any contact and just do walk throughs. ??

In his defense on this one, getting anyone of any high star rating was going to be tough this cycle. No 4 or 5 star that watched Mafah and Ship play this year was going to ride the pine for 2 years. Also no one would transfer in for this reason.
We have 1A-1C at running back next year. And should be able to pick up a few in the cycle.
Bottom line recruiting in the portal era is extremely challenging unless you are Bama tampering and talking star players into transfering.
Wild West baby! CFB is now the NFL without rules.

we didnt get some huge big name back with 5 stars this year but when look at how we run it that is ok. We dont pound one guy 20 plus carries a game. we spread it around on carries and usually keep one for fresh legs late in games.

Would you really expect Dabo to say otherwise? He loved our QB situation last year I’m sure and the offensive line was going to be the best in years, for the 7th year in a row (8 if you count this years hype).
The unbridled optimism gets a little tiring when you constantly hear it. How about just letting the results speak for themselves and if something is off, fix it (like the QB room from last year to this year).
I don’t think it’s wrong to admit there is a depth issue at RB.

If the unbridled optimism is bothering you, no one is forcing you to stay. The fan portal is wide open. Maybe you would be better suited with a coach that blames his players all the time. I hear the dancing fool at LSU is taking all the new fans he can get.

Recognizing a deficiency in your recruiting in a new era vs blaming players is quite the reach.
4 running backs wasn’t enough in the pre portal era. It certainly isn’t now.

So Dabo is guilty of “unbridled optimism “ and y’all are just “recognizing a deficiency “ in his recruiting and know what his team needs better than he does. Got it.

Considering we lost several backs to transfer just last year, transfers that I’m sure Dabo wasn’t expecting going into the season, yeah. He’s banking on everything breaking his way. That doesn’t even factor the potential for injury at a very physical position.
Sorry being realistic is such a problem for you. But at the end of the day, you probably have home owners insurance in case something happens that is unexpected.

I have no problem being realistic. We evidently just have different opinions of what is realistic. I believe what has happened 10 of the last 11 years is more likely to happen next year than what happened 1 out the last 11 years (last year). I do have homeowners insurance. But I don’t have a duplicate home standing ready next door just in case the worst happens.

The problem is that 11th year is the only year we had with the portal and it’s not going away. I hope I’m proven wrong, but there were several games last year when one or two of the big 3 weren’t able to play. This year we are about to go through a full season of that with no margin for transfers.

You guys are crazy if you think what Dabo says in public

is the same thing the staff realizes behind closed doors.
I mean what do you expect Dabo to do or say? Throw a staff member under a bus or admit that we are a couple of injuries away from only having one decent starter and a 117th rated freshman RB in the backfield with significant carries? Dabo is not an idiot.
All three backs that are coming back were dinged up at the same time at one point during the season last year and it was a good thing we had Rencher.
Now replace a decent former walk-on redshirt+ senior, Rencher, with Adams and you now have our backfield.
We absolutely needed at least one decent freshman back and put all our eggs in one basket with Trevor then scabbled at the last minute and went with our only option, turning a gray shirt to a full ride.
It blows my mind how you guys can not be worried about RB especially with the kind of season we had last year with injuries.

I get it though, why worry about something you have no control over.
But it all boils down to the same thing on TNET, point out an obvious issue to discuss on a discussion board and it rubs the same people the wrong way.
I consider it a badge of honor to get downvoted on TNET without any serious rebuttal... most of the time it means you're on to something.

We’ve had the discussion repeatedly. Just a difference of opinion. I agree with Dabo that the 3 very good to great running backs we have plus Adams is a pretty good running back room. Y’all think we need more. And some people look for the good in a situation and some look for something to complain about.

All of the reasons given here to be concerned about the RB room seem to be more applicable to the WR group than the running backs IMO.

... season regarding the number and severity of injuries we suffered last season.
The odds say that won’t happen again for a long time. To just assume it will is simply unwarranted pessimism.
Having three strong, talented, healthy RBs should be plenty.
Any more than that and you’ll see a bee line for the transfer portal.
Case in point ... Chez Melusi.
Heck, we couldn’t even keep Mikey Dukes happy.
And finding a walk-on who will do anything more than provide a warm body if thrust into critical action are very, very slim.
While Darian Rencher deserves all the respect in the world for being a good player and a fine representative for Clemson, we do not win big ball games with him as our starter.
The transfer portal has made keeping a large stable of talented players happy waiting their turn a thing of the past.
You may be able to maintain a revolving door of good players coming and going if you like that in a program, but can’t just stockpile talent anymore.

Dabo coaches the way he believes, it has taken Clemson to new heights because he had the faith, plan & work ethic to make it happen.
Clemson Football just keeps getting better and better everyday in Every Way!! I can’t wait to see the 2022 team play I believe we will contend for another National Championship!

HumbleServant - I couldn't agree more.
"His Plan"! "His Faith"! "His work ethic"!
All of the above has created the belief out there that makes people post things like what we have been seeing over the last few years. All the people who think it's National Championship or Clemson is a bust are "driving that bus" and it's not right! Dabo Swinney has taken Clemson football to the point where it's not a dream to "think National Championship in back to back years"! But, people have to be realistic too.
I think Adams is going to play above his star-rating personally! Utah didn't help; remember he is originally from Georgia dn played in I believe a 6A or higher level there. He's motivated to show he was under-recruited and we have time to get him faster/stronger before he's needed (admittedly if all goes well health-wise).
I can't understand HumbleServant how this man isn't given the benefit of the doubt #1. #2 How people get so down on the program so quick. I remember just wanting to get to a decent bowl game; let alone go multiple years with 10 plus wins. The "Jones's of CFB are shining and doing great - good for them"! I could not care less about them or what they have going on. I am aware of them - but they aren't my focus! Why should they be? My life and my support for Clemson doesn't change based on what some other programs are doing! I just support my own and back my own. Been doing it when we would lose to Duke when Duke was sub .500 or have a disappointing surprising close game against a FCS team, etc. No National Titles, not even ranked. Didn't care about the high praise other programs got then HumbleServant and I don't care now "Forget Them"! Some people HS can't forget them and it's beat Dabo up if he isn't "keeping up with the Jones's"! And, it's unfair and unfortunate! His vision of Clemson program made it so you have the "Audacity" to think you can keep up with the Jones's in the 1st place!

Allow me to enlighten some of you shade tree comedians and recruiting legends. We had an extraordinary year when it comes to transfers and injuries. If we were not deep in the RB room, then why did Chez and company transfer? And how in the heck did the group earn a final grade of A? Ship is all heart. Pace is getting better and better. I remember a play about mid year when he dropped a screen and Dabo got in his butt real good. Next play, or 2 plays later, he gave a 2nd or 3rd effort to get a tough 1st down. From that point on, he was changed for the better. And then there is Mafah. I worked on an addition at Grayson high school his senior year. There, he was described as a fire hydrant. He broke his tibia about 2/3 through the season. So, he was coming off a semi major injury last season. This crew, with a little help from Adams, will be stellar this year, provided we don't suffer the catastrophic situation we endured last year. Vegas odds would make me guess that isn't likely. Everyone here needs to put their big boy pants on and realize what we endured last season probably will not happen again this year. These guys are tough, and are getting better every minute of every day. Go Paws!!!!

How many running back did we start last year with? How many transferred? What if two transfer out mid year this year?

I am thinking the losses at RB have not been bad Bowman- went to Florida and was backup- had maybe 100 yards for the year. Dixon- was spending more time in the shack than on the field- we shall see how he fairs @ WV. Dukes- did he play- I may have him and Mellusi mixed up One went to Wisconsin and seemed to be doing ok- until the knee injury.

I would still like to see a really BIG, fast 6’4” 240 pound fullback available to run the ball when you absolutely HAD to have a few yards for a first down OR touchdown.
