Ryan Linthicum was listed as THE best center in the nation

Jun 26, 2022, 10:55 AM

coming out of high school. Were the scouts THAT wrong about him, that we have a converted guard playing center instead of him?

This goes back to a post I made awhile ago. It is not that we don't RECRUIT well along the O-Line, it just seems to be that once they get here, they disappear. Now, I realize he is only a RS Freshman, but come on, NUMBER 1 in the NATION out of high school, and he can't win a starting job for us? Something is wrong here.

I often wonder the same thing.

Granted, we have a new OLINE coach so I'm in a wait and see mode until our season is underway.

One thing I've also seen a lot is that OL is really hard to predict and more of an art than science when it comes to developing them.

Typically OL recruits aren't actively seen as able to contribute as quickly as say DL due to the nuances of the position.

For every Mitch Hyatt that is fundamentally sound and able to hold their own as a true fresh, often it can takes 2-3 years for OL to start coming on from a strength standpoint.

Hopefully someone more in the know can comment because I'm also curious as to how our OL recruits, despite us doing much better the last few years signing talent, still struggle to impact.

Based on the articles I've come across, seems like Coach V's defensive approach seemed to not help OL development too.

Of course, going back to the new OL coach comment, maybe that (hopefully) will turn the tide for us moving forward.

Everything you said is true, but again, wouldn't you expect

the #1 recruit at his position in the NATION to be advanced enough to get early playing time, and be a starter sooner rather than later?

Recruits listed as “Center” in high school are sorta rare

Jun 26, 2022, 4:48 PM [ in reply to Ryan Linthicum was listed as THE best center in the nation ]

If you look at the recruiting services they have very few guys in the “Center” category and those guys are almost never listed as 5-star prospects.

Generally the top listed Center in the nation by recruiting services is a 4-star prospect followed by a bunch of 3-star guys. Why is that?

The Center position in college is a very complicated and cerebral position to play and to play well.

Maybe a young guy like Linthicum, who excelled in High school just hasn’t caught on to the much more stringent mental requirements of playing Center in college.

These are just my personal observations and suppositions.

Clay Webb @ UGA was only Rivals 5-star Center in 20 years

and he has been a total bust.

The other question is what level of competition did he play against? This the usual "Gotcha" about o-linemen. Not many of them play against 4-5 star defenses. So it takes awhile to catch up with the college game.

The two new guys on OL, Miller and Sadler, both appear to be of a different mold of OL than what we have gotten in the past. They sound like they are more technically and fundamentally sound as well as more physically ready.
Their problem may be that there is too many people in their path to being a starter as true freshmen. I don't recall what the situation was when Mitch Hyatt arrived - was there a hole or very low quality depth on the OL that year?

I appreciate the previous comment that OL may be a little more art and less science in what it takes to put a great line together.

It sounds crazy but he may be the difference between a good season and a great season. The center and guard positions have struggled for a while. The tackles have been sufficient in my opinion. Man it would be great to have a dominant center.

I have always said that Center is the most important position on the offensive side of the ball. If you can't get a clean snap, it doesn't matter who you have in the backfield or on the edges. Go Will and go Paws!!!!

Will Putnam 2022

Jun 26, 2022, 4:04 PM

DavidHood® Question regarding Putnam if you're inclined to answer David ... Putnam's game grades at LG the past two seasons have been minimal even by Clemson recent OL standards. And coaches chose Bockhurst over Putnam to start at Center in 2021. So what gives? Why does Austin, OC and Swinney believe Putnam is the answer at Center? Has the scheme changed? Has Putnam changed his training routine and/or increased his speed/strength/quickness? Is Putnam a better run blocker? pass blocker? Appreciate your thoughts ...
