Tie-breakers in a division-less conference

Jul 18, 2022, 11:05 PM

SEC hasn’t decided on their new scheduling model yet quoting tie-breakers as a hang up. Got me thinking…

Wouldn’t it be fun if the SCHOOLS had a vote on who won a tie-breaker to go to a conference championship game? Say 2-3 schools have the same record but didn’t play one another that season. The remaining schools have one vote each to send one of those to the championship. Come to your decision however you see fit, but the AD from the remaining schools submits one vote to the conference and the results are revealed during a show at the end of the season.

The carnage that would ensue would be amazing.

Quote from the Athletic article below:

“Sankey pointed to tiebreakers in a non-division format, and one source said there were legitimate questions in Destin about how that would work.”

1. Head-to-Head
2. Common Opponents Records
3. CFP Committee Rankings (would involve OOC at that point, plus context)

Think the tiebreakers would be as follows

Jul 18, 2022, 11:28 PM

1) is North Carolina #1?

2) can we find a way to make UNC #1?

3) are you sure we can't find a way to get UNC in there?

4) can we put Notre Dame in there? Technically they're ACC...

Actually not fun at all. Way back when football rules were much different (1970, I think) Michigan and Ohio State both finished the season undefeated and their game against each other ended in a tie. Each school in the Big Ten got to vote to decide who went to the Rose Bowl. My side was the school which did NOT go (back in those days only the conference winner went to a bowl game). I always hated that rule. It introduced the ugly politics to the the sport.
