How long does Brownell have b4 we can call him Larry Shyatt?
Feb 11, 2013, 2:14 PM

Brownell seems like a good coach and great guy, but how long does he have and what does he have to do in the next 2 to 3 seasons to keep his job?
Can he recruit in the ACC and go to the NCAAs 2 out of every 4 years?
I don't want to see this program decline to the Shyatt era where the team was coached by a great guy and great basketball mind, but just not the fit for Clemson.

Man, I don't know that's tough. I would like to think that we would be able to give a complete recruiting cycle before passing any real judgement. Everyone seems to agree that our program/his system is designed to compete with experienced uperclassmen so I would assume that in 2-3 years we should be competitive.
If we're still this incosistant then, it will be hard to defend him.

Honest question

If it were my decision, I'd give him this year and the next two. Then evaluate him and the program at that point. That would give him two full classes of his own seniors. That should be plenty long enough to see what he can do. OP got us turned around pretty quickly after taking over for Shyatt. Brownell walked into a darn good situation here. Clemson was at its peak in national name recognition. We had just been to the big dance 3 straight times. We had just competed for an ACC tourney champ. We've done nothing but go downhill. It doesnt appear that BB is cut out for recruiting in the ACC.

and never won more than 5 conference games in a season, finishing 7th, 9th, 9th, 9th, and 8th in an ACC that had only 9 members.
Brownell in his 2 complete seasons at Clemson has finished with 9 and 8 conference wins and ranks of T-4th and 7th in the ACC.
In fact, Brownell has already won more conference games in 2 1/2 seasons than Shyatt's teams won in 5

his own players come on board but no way is he even close to Shyatt. Shyatt seemed like he didn't even know how to coach. 40 pt losses were common. We weren't even competitive in 70% of our ACC games.

Essentially missing one whole recruiting cycle can cripple a basketball team.
You have to remember than we have 2 seniors, one of whom plays like a freshman, and that 2 of probably our top 7-8 players are out this year in Devin Coleman and Jaron Blossomgame

we are probably at the lowest point right now that we will be with Brownell.
While we are not winning like i wish we would, I see upside and improvement in this team particularly the young kids.
In my opinion we will never call him Shyatt because he will not reach that level.

Shyatt is doing pretty well at Wyoming with Nance's son!
BB will bring in the right players soon. Adding Pitt, Cuse, Louisville etc will demand that he get better players.

YESSSS! through 2015.. I have been happy with everything he has done(Milt still on the team is exception). I would like to see him recruit some GOOD BIG MEN.. I am very happy with the small guys he has and McDaniels is outstanding!!

He is going to get a while. Everyone wants to bank on the fact that he is some x and o genius, yet hamstrung that OP left nothing behind. That is foola gold. He inherited a program that had been to three straight NCAAs, so it wasnt like the brand was tarnished. I dont think so. His teams play hard, but continued offensive struggles make it a hard team to watch. He HAS been here three years. It is about time that the lack of offense, and auccess falls at his feet. As an aside, you make sure that the premier three point shooter in the league ia covered in a situation like yesterday. Your at home. You risk overtime. But you take no chances on the viaiting team beat you at the buzzer in that fashion.

What we did in basketball switching from OP to Brownell in terms of system is akin to switching from the Chad Morris offense to the I formation. Both systems have had some success, but they're vastly different and it is difficult to quickly transition between the two

Lots of points in your post. I'll comment on one. I don't know if Gottfried drew up that play or not...that doesn't matter. What matters is that it was one of the best executed plays I have seen in a long time. Jersey pull and all, that play would have worked against many teams in the ACC yesterday.

If you watched the game closely, during the last timeout Wood was pointing to the spot on the floor where he would be in order to take the game winning shot. No reason I can think off why Clemson didn't have someone in his jersey as soon as the inbound pass was made. I bet NCSU practices that every day. Duh!

With all due repect, sir, I don't think you have a grasp of the b'ball program at Clemson. To change the culture at Clemson in b'ball, you have to have a longer term commitment to this part of our athletic program. Short term thinking gives you the results that we got with Barnes and Purnell. They left!! We don't want to repeat that scenario. IMHO, it is going to take a longer range view and support for us to reach the elite status in b'ball and to date, we have not made that commitment. Will Radakovich make that commitment, I hope so.

A commitment must come from others also besides the AD. Are the students committed? Attendance makes me say NO! IF we can get (and keep) the Cameron type of environment with the students totally all in with the bb program, things will improve. Regardless of the opponent, LJ should be filled for every game. The game Sunday is a prime example. Many empty seats for a very big game. Don't fault the team if you didn't do your part. When the cameras show students walking around campus during a game that is not good imo! The facility improvements are on the way. Make your donation if you haven't. Don't complain if you aren't doing your part. Feb. 15th is deadline for fifty percent IPTAAY payments.

opening line? I don't profess to know everything on Clemson basketball, but outside of Tim Bourret, who does? Your theory on short-term thinking got multiple NCAA appearances and players that went to the NBA? Rather than use terms like short-term and longer range view, please elaborate with specifics so people like myself who don't have a grasp can have a grasp on Clemson basketball.
